Functions of the Skin: 1. Prevent water loss. 2. Protects from injury & infection. 3. Helps to regulate body temperature. 4. Eliminates waste. 5. Detect information about external environment. 6. Produces vitamin D.

Layers of the Skin: 1. Epidermis 2. Dermis Subcutaneous Tissue

1. Epidermis Outermost layer of skin -Corneal: Consists of the 25-30 outermost layers of dead cells. (exfoliation) -Basal: Layer consisting of living cells that continually divide to replace the dead cells. -Proteins: Keratin- waterproof Melanin- protection from UV light & skin color Melanocytes- specialized cells that produce melanin. 2. Dermis Inner, thickest layer of the skin. -Structures: blood vessels nerves hair follicles nails erector pili muscles Exocrine Glands: oil glands (sebaceous) sweat glands (sudoriferous) -Proteins: Collagen- durability Elastin- elasticity

Subcutaneous Tissue -Inner layer of tissue composed of adipose. -Function: energy storage and insulation
