Cognitive LOA General Learning Outcomes Workshop/ Discussion

General Learning Outcomes:
3
GLO Workshop & Presentation The aim of this activity is for you to work in groups to create detailed essays for the 'General Learning Outcomes' for the Cognitive LOA. Each group will present an essay on the subject and share it with the rest of the class Pay close attention to the command terms and all the work we have done on structuring SAQs and LAQs, use the wiki and your notes to get all the info you need.
4
1) 1) Outline three principles that define the cognitive level of analysis and explain how these principles may be demonstrated in research (that is, theories and/or studies). SAQ plan: Outline three of the principles & for each principle use a study/theory that to explain how that principle is demonstrated
5
2) Discuss how and why particular research methods are used at the cognitive level of analysis (for example, experiments, observations, interviews) LAQ plan: Include explanations of the different methods used in the LOA, and discuss their strengths and limitations using researched examples. Make sure you bring in the issue of ecological validity. To answer the ‘why’ part of this question, make it clear why researchers favor the methods they used over other methodologies. 2)
6
3) Discuss ethical considerations related to research studies at the cognitive level of analysis. LAQ Plan: Use examples of research from this LOA to discuss ethical issues – make sure the APA ethical guidelines are referred to in your answer, as well as the importance of cost benefit analysis. This answer should contain an ethical evaluation of the studies.. 3)

General Essay Structure….. Introduction Define relevant terms Identify what theories/studies you will explain – Provide a clear thesis statement (an answer to the question). Body Paragraphs Use arguments supported by specific evidence. Start each paragraph with a topic sentence which identifies your main idea or argument. Select at least three pieces of specific evidence to support your argument. REMEMBER TO EVALUATE (on the LAQ). Make sure you refer back to the question Conclusion Summarize main arguments Make a clear statement about the question with a reason.

SAQ Rubric….
9
LAQ Rubric… Notice how 9 marks(41%) are for critical thinking (evaluation!)

Make sure you: Write a high quality essay Proof read it Submit it via email to marshalldy@ismanila.org marshalldy@ismanila.org

Cognitive LOA Test: Major Date: Friday 13 th May Topics to review: 1.The interaction of cognitive and biological factors in emotion (long/short route theory/ appraisal) 2.Evaluation of one theory of how emotion may affect one cognitive process (Flashbulb memory) 3.Principles of the Cognitive LOA and how these are demonstrated in studies/theories. 4.Research methodology at the cognitive LOA 5.Ethical considerations related to research studies at the cognitive LOA
12
Topics from review activity below…
13
Sheet 1 Define the principles of the cognitive LOA Identify theories/ studies that demonstrate these principles Explain how these studies/ theories connect to the principles Sheet 2 Identify the research methods used in the Cognitive LOA Define each of these research methods Identify a study that uses each of these research methods Evaluate each of these research methods. Sheet 3 State the ethical considerations which relate to research at the Cognitive LOA Identify a research study which relates to each of these ethical considerations Explain how the studies relate to the ethical considerations. Sheet 4 Give Damasio’s (1994) definition of emotion Identify the names, dates and researchers of two theories which relate to the interaction between biological and cognitive factors in emotion Explain the three stages of the emotional response identified by Damasio (1994) Sheet 5 Draw a flow diagram to show the two biological pathways in emotion identified by Le Doux (1999) Give the full names of the following abbreviations: HPAC and H-ANS-AM Explain the role of the above pathways in the emotional response Sheet 6 Define the term appraisal Give the names of the brain structures related to appraisal Identify and explain the two types of coping proposed by Lazarus (1975) Give the aims, procedures, findings & conclusions of Speisman et al.’s (1964) experiment. Evaluate Speisman et al.’s (1964) experiment Sheet 7 Define the term FBM Explain the big debate surrounding FBM Explain the role of emotion in FBM Give the aims, procedures, findings & conclusions of Brown & Kulick’s (1977) interview study Evaluate Brown & Kulick’s (1977) interview study Sheet 8 Explain how McCloskey et al. (1988) interview study contradicts previous research by Brown & Kulick into FBM Evaluate McCloskey et al. (1988) interview study Sheet 9 Produce a mind map showing detailed info on Phelps (2004) fMRI study of FBM Write an overall conclusion evaluating FBM theory
