Some words about your diction paragraphs And then a prompt about “The Box Man”
2
Always describe the diction … there MUST be an adjective before the word “diction” Use quote marks to indicate if you are speaking about a particular word “chromium” Always write in present tense! Remember to answer the questions “for what purpose?” and “how and why does the author do this?” Writing hints

A word or phrase is "loaded" when it has a secondary, evaluative meaning in addition to its primary, descriptive meaning. When language is "loaded", it is loaded with its evaluative meaning. A loaded word is like a loaded gun, and its evaluative meaning is the bullet Plant versus Weed Animal versus Beast Loaded Words

“Throughout this piece, the use of contrasting description is key in describing the clash of culture in America, and the subsequent effects of this clash on new generations. The author uses the ‘chromium American accent’ to show the uniformity of the immigrant children, however, the author then uses the names of the children to display their genealogical, and immigrant, differences.” Some good moments Notice how the example explains the topic sentence and the analysis!

“The author uses formal, almost stiff, diction to demonstrate the disconnect between Americans and their immigrant counterparts. Mentioning the ‘cold- hearted city,’ Rodriquez paints a picture of how America treats immigrants.” More good! Good use of adjectives to describe the diction The quote is explained, although it could be expanded.

“The author cleverly uses words that out of context would be positive, however, they are clearly negative in their use. This can be seen in ‘America exists as the voice of the crowd, a menacing sound – the high nasal accent of American English.’ The writer first builds up America with talk of democracy and freedom, then uses this newfound respect to make the second part, which mocks Americans, very harsh.” Yay! Really good analysis, needs to be said more succinctly
