Unit 2 ● Week 4 remote Key Words Define: When something is remote, it is secluded, or out of the way. Context Clue: We took a vacation on a remote beach. Ask: How is being remote different from being close by? Context Clue: “Well, it is remote- and I mean secluded-Inca city” (The Inca City, pg 186).

Unit 2 ● Week 4 escort Key Words Define: An escort is a person who goes with someone else for company or protection Context Clue: The police often serve as an escort for ambulances. Ask: When might you need an escort? Context Clue: “Our escort was a man from the area who descended from the Inca” (The Inca City, pg 187).

Unit 2 ● Week 4 interpreter Key Words Define: An interpreter translates between different languages. Context Clue: When I visit France, I need an interpreter. Ask: Why might explorers need an interpreter? Context Clue: “Not only did he provide information about the area, he also worked as our interpreter.” (The Inca City, pg 187).

Unit 2 ● Week 4 vegetation Key Words Define: Vegetation means the plant life in an area. Context Clue: Fire burns houses and vegetation. Ask: What kind of vegetation grows in your area? Context Clue: “As we rode the train, our escort pointed out unfamiliar vegetation that grows in the rainforest” (The Inca City, pg 187).

Unit 2 ● Week 4 venomous Key Words Define: Venomous means that an animal has venom, or poison. Context Clue: Some snakes and spiders are venomous. Ask: What do venomous animals have? Context Clue: “There are some venomous snakes that live there” (The Inca City, pg 187).

Unit 2 ● Week 4 withstood Key Words Define: Withstood means a person or thing was able to survive a difficult event or situation. Context Clue: The tree withstood the strong winds of the storm. Ask: What withstood the strong winds? Context Clue: “The stones have withstood the test of time” (The Inca City, pg 186).

Unit 2 ● Week 4 foretold Key Words Define: Foretold means an event was predicted, or spoken of, before it happened. Context Clue: The newspaper foretold the baseball team’s defeat. Ask: Has anyone ever foretold something that happened to you? Context Clue: “The travel brochure foretold we would have an amazing adventure, and it certainly didn’t lie!” (The Inca City, pg 187).

Ask: Why might someone want to be accompanied on a long trip? Context Clue: “I accompanied my mom and dad to Peru.” (The Inca City, pg 186).
