Equality Indicators at Uppsala University Louise Kennerberg

Background Initiative taken by the Uppsala University Gender Equality Committee in 2004. UU developed specific indicators for the university based on university data: -Reliable -Easy to compare -Requires no extra reporting

The Equality Indicators A self-assessment instrument Facilitates gender mainstreaming, a clear explanation of the gender balance Information to staff and students Quantitative measures of important equality aspects of the university.

The Equality Indicators Ten indicators of gender balance for staff, postgraduates and students: 1.Management 2.Occupational groups 3.Form of employment 4.Parental leave 5.Sick leave 6.Degree of activity 7.Financing 8.Post graduate degrees 9.Registered students 10.Graduate degrees

The BI-system UU uses DI-Diver as a Business Intelligence platform. DI-Diver includes possibilities to ”mold” the data and present it on the web in the form of visual indicators. Possibilities to control the ”user structure”. The indicators are available on the university web in the management information system (GLIS).

Approach The design was carried out at the Equalities Office in cooperation with: -The Gender Equality Commissioner and the Gender Equality Committee -Specialists working with the data systems -Researchers at the university -Equality groups at the university where involved in a trial run of the indicators

Two types of users 1.General user. Can not see the indicators parental leave, sick leave or form of employment on a detailed level. 2.Specific user. Can see details about the three indicators above for their own department. This requires a authorization from the head of the department. Training of users is offered.

Two types of indicators Co-indicators: The proportion of women and men in a group. Goal: at least 40 percent of each sex in a group. No more than 20 percentage point difference. Separate indicators: The proportion of individuals belonging to a cathegory in a same-sex group. Goal: no more than 5 percentage point difference between the relative proportion of women and men belonging to a cathegory.

Reflections Important with a detailed documentation for: Users and others interested at UU The administrator (me) Others interested outside UU Easy to update every year. Interesting to see the development when more years are added. A lot of interest from outside UU. Comparisons of different universities in the future?
