Snowball On your sheet of paper, write a vocabulary word from your vocabulary list Make the paper into a ball When Mrs. Chapel starts the music, you may “throw” the ball When the music stops, grab a ball open it up and write the definition of the word and also write a new word

Graphing When to use What graph? Pie graphs: use pie graphs if you want to show percentages or parts of a whole. Bar graphs: use bar graphs when you are graphing a number of unrelated things on the same chart. Line graph: use a line graph when you want to show how one variable is changed by another one.

questions John designs an experiment to compare 6 different bird seeds. He sets up 1 small container of each type of bird seed in his yard and observes the birds for one hour each afternoon. After collecting his data, John wants to graph the number of birds that ate each type of seed. What type of graph would best fit his results? a. line graph b. bar graph c. pie chart d. none of these

Variable On a bar or line graph: The x-axis of the graph is the independent variable (the cause, or what the researcher changed at the beginning of the experiment) The y-axis of the graph is the dependent variable (the effect, or what the researcher measured at the end of the experiment)

Sarah wants to design an experiment to see if green light will help her plants grow better. She decides to take two of the same plant types, expose one to green light, and the other to natural sunlight. For 2 weeks, she measures the plants' height (in cm) every other day, and records her results in a table. When Sarah graphs her results, which axis should she put the height, or the dependent variable on? a. y-axis b. x-axis c. z-axis d. there is not enough information provided to decide.

Title Should always be: The dependence of (dependent variable) on (independent variable). OR - The effect of (independent variable) on (dependent variable)

Other information Abrupt changes tell you something happened Graphs should show smooth lines or curves Draw units on both axis LABEL each axis Use a ruler to make it look neat Legends help explain the graph

Practice graphing Practice graphing with the sheets in your packet. When you finish, try to graph the problem from your homework last night. Do the pie graph exercise in you packet if you haven't already

What is density? a measuremement of how tightly matter is crammed together. Units=g/cm3 1cm3=1ml Equation: d=m/v

Density practice problem d=m/v An object has a mass of 45 grams and a volume of 15cm3, what is the density of this object? a. 3.0 g/cm3 b. 675 g/cm3 c. 3.0 mg/m3 d. 0.3 g/cm3

Density practice problem A chef fills a 50 mL container with 43. 5g of cooking oil. What is the density of the oil? Calculate the mass of a liquid with a density of 2.5 g/mL and a volume of 15 mL.

Lab rules today No horseplay Follow the directions and read the lab before starting Wear your hair back Pick up trash from the floor and tables and throw in the trash can Return ALL supplies to where you got them If you are in the hall way, be extra QUIET Stop and listen if you here the music stop

Closure Students of different ages were given the same jigsaw puzzle to put together. They were timed to see how long it took to finish the puzzle. What is the independent variable in this experiment? a. the number of students participating b. the type of puzzle given c. the ages of the students d. the time it took them to complete the puzzle What is the equation for density?
