Signs for Storytelling What do you often do when something exciting has happened to you? Or ….. When you have watched something good, bad or ugly on TV? You tell someone about it! Unfortunately, a lack of English vocabulary is preventing many young children from telling their own stories as they lack the building blocks of narrative. Signing for stories gives them the blocks they need.
18
Signs for Storytelling A child’s inability to tell a story may not be a ‘lack of imagination’ it may be that the child lacks the building blocks of narrative. Story making has to be part of the daily routine – it is as important as phonics. Indeed what is the point of teaching children to blend and segment if they have no stories to tell.

Signs for Feelings and Behaviour By introducing signs for feelings and behaviour, we have given our children a tool that enables them to talk about and understand their feelings, as well as manage their behaviour with increasing independence.
27
Signs for Feelings and Behaviour Research has shown that signing has a powerful and positive impact on children’s behaviour and ability to listen. In comparison, children were more frequently distracted or disruptive where sign language was not used.
