Do Now What is the purpose of the reproductive system? What are some differences between the male and female reproductive systems?
2
Reproductive Systems
3
Male Reproductive System Purpose: to produce and maintain male sex cells (sperm) to transport sperm and supporting fluids to the outside to secrete male sex hormones
4
Organs Testes: contain sperm-making cells Scrotum: encloses, protects, and regulates temp of testes seminiferous tubules: produce sperm cells epididymis: stores maturing sperm cells penis: external organ conveys urine and semen to the outside ductus deferens: conveys sperm cells to ejaculatory duct bulbourethral gland: secretes fluid that lubricates end of penis
6
Erection blood accumulates in the erectile tissues due to increased arterial pressure and narrowing of the veins in the penis Penis swells and elongates
7
Orgasm pleasurable feeling due to sexual stimulation results in physiological and psychological release (ejaculation)
8
Ejaculation semen that collects in the urethra is forced to the outside Fluid from the bulbourethral gland comes out first followed by fluid from the prostrate gland, and the passage of sperm cells
9
Female Reproductive System Purpose: produce and maintain female sex cells (oocytes) transport oocytes to site of fertilization provide an environment for a developing offspring move that offspring to the outside produce female sex hormones
10
Female Organs ovaries: produces oocytes and female sex hormones uterine tubes: conveys secondary oocyte toward uterus; site of fertilization; conveys developing embryo to uterus uterus: protects and sustains embryo during pregnancy
11
Female Organs Cont vagina: receives erect penis during intercourse, conveys uterine secretions, and offspring during childbirth labia majora: enclose and protect other external organs labia minora: protect openings of vagina and urethra clitoris: produces feelings of pleasure during sexual intercouse Vestibular glands: secrete fluid tha moistens and lubricates
13
Erection erectile tissues in the clitoris and around vaginal entrance respond to sexual stimulation and swell vagina expands and elongates
14
Lubrication vestibular glands secrete mucus into the vestibule and lower end of the vagina allows insertion of the penis into the vagina
15
Orgasm abundant nerves in clitoris are stimulated and cause a psychological release just before that the outer 1/3 of the vagina swells and the walls of the uterus contract rhythmically to transport sperm cells through the tract
16
The clitoris has nearly 8,000 nerve fibers, while the penis has only 4,000
