You are a member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. You will travel thousands of miles, experience lands, rivers and peoples that no Americans ever have before. You are an experienced woodsman and a productive hunter. Your adventure will start at the winter staging area at Camp Dubois, Illinois Territory. You are to meet your brother in Great Falls. Meriwether Lewis William Clark

Before you go: Pick 2 activities to do Make a list of everything that you will need to take with you. Make sure you have a journal so that you can record all of the animals, plants or people that you see along the way. Draw a map of the trail you will take. Use KidPix and draw the map then save it for your PowerPoint Slideshow Draw 3 animals and 1 plant that you will see on the trail. Use KidPix and then save to your PowerPoint Slideshow. Calculate the miles that you travel every night. On an Excel spreadsheet, figure out the average miles you walk a day compared to a month..

You have made it to Great Falls because you are waiting for your brother to join up with the Corps. You wait 2 weeks but your brother never arrives.

While you are waiting for your brother, watch this video about the Expedition

I will go back to the Expedition.I will stay at the Missouri River Lewis and Clark gave you directions to Clearwater River, the next big stop. You have turned the map around and you are now North of the Missouri River all by yourself. You need to make choices about the journey that will make sure that you survive. What will you do?

You have decided to stay longer and wait for your brother a little while longer. Click on the mountain to see what you need to while you wait.

Make a map of the area using KidPix Write an “How to build a shelter” document using Microsoft Word Draw and write in your journal, so you can record what you find, eat and do Take the digital camera and go find plants that you might have seen and make a PowerPoint using them. Pick 2 activities:

Things you need to consider: Beware of the animals on the trail-remember the buffalo that almost trampled you and your friends as you slept. There are many kinds of plants. You can not tell if they are poisonous You can only travel 12-15 miles a day. There may be as many as 50 different Indian tribes that you will encounter-they may be the only way to make it through this adventure.

If you take a horse and wagon, then you must take enough food for him. There are no signs to let you know where you are going. There are no hotels or inns. Water is essential but it is also heavy to carry. What will you eat? Even more things to consider

Will you need a suitcase full of clothes? Do you need paper? Which tools do you need? Will you go in a wagon or on a horse or by foot? Think about…….

Things that you might encounter

What did you do to survive? Compare your list for the expedition to that of Lewis and Clark’s list as found on the website you visited. Use Kidspiration to make a Venn Diagram to show your results. Draw a picture of a plant that you know about and compare it to one that was on the trail. Draw it in KidPix, Did the trail you take lead you to the Pacific Ocean? Write the directions for your trail in a word document.
