Water Quality Activity I Leaching Set up Amy Biddle

Water Quality Activity I: Objectives: To use digital imaging to track the leaching of natural organic matter into water from leaves. To compare the leaching of natural organic matter from two different leaf sources.

Timeline: Leaching Experiment Today: 11:30- 12:15: Introduction to Water Quality Intro: Aquaria set up Time to plan/ start aquaria setup Lunch 1:00- 2:00:Finish aquaria set up Take T= 0 images Over the course of the afternoon: Take more leaching images Tomorrow: Over the course of the day: Take more leaching images

What to do: First: Find your group (3 or 4 people) Find your spot (3 containers per group)

What to do: First: Find your group (3 or 4 people) Find your spot (3 containers per group) Second:Identify a question and a hypothesis

old or young? conifer or deciduous? maple or oak? grass or tree? other ideas? Which type of leaf leaches organic material fastest?

What to do: First: Find your group (3 or 4 people) Find your spot (3 containers per group) Second:Identify a question and a hypothesis Third:Collect leaves

What to do: First: Find your group (3 or 4 people) Find your spot (3 containers per group) Second:Identify a question and a hypothesis Third:Collect leaves Fourth:Prepare leaching experiment

Leaf material cut and measured 2.50 g for small containers 6.25 g for aquaria and terrariums Preparing Leaching Experiment

Leaf material cut and measured 2.50 g for small containers 6.25 g for aquaria and terrariums Preparing Leaching Experiment Add water to container 2 L for small containers 5 L for aquaria and terrariums

Leaf material cut and measured 2.50 g for small containers 6.25 g for aquaria and terrariums Preparing Leaching Experiment Add leaves to container Mix to wet leaves Add water to container 2 L for small containers 5 L for aquaria and terrariums

What to do: First: Find your group (3 or 4 people) Find your spot (3 containers per group) Second:Identify a question and a hypothesis Third:Collect leaves Fourth:Prepare leaching experiment Fifth: Take initial images: T = 0

Taking images of your containers T 0 will NOT look like this! Leaf Type 1Water Control Leaf Type 2

What to do: First: Find your group (3 or 4 people) Find your spot (3 containers per group) Second:Identify a question and a hypothesis Third:Collect leaves Fourth:Prepare leaching experiment Fifth: Take initial images: T = 0 Sixth:Take images every 3-6 hours as you can during today and tomorrow. Keep track of the time in hours.
