3. On the north-central coast of Vietnam, in Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng National Park, a place full of incredible sights, lies Sơn Đoòng Cave, the world’s largest known cave. How large? Its biggest chamber alone is over 3 miles long, 660 feet high, and nearly 500 feet wide. Its stalagmites tower up to 230 feet above the cave’s floor. You’d think a cave this big would be difficult to miss, but the entrance of Sơn Đoòng wasn’t found until 1991, and then the cave itself wasn’t surveyed until 2009 and 2010. Among Sơn Đoòng’s many surprises is that rainforest you see here – it isn’t outside the cave, it’s within. A sinkhole up on the surface allows sunlight into a portion of Sơn Đoòng, and seeds and spores that have drifted in over the years took root in the cave’s damp soil. So a spelunking venture here will reveal a magical underground environment on a scale you’ll find nowhere else, plus a bonus visit into a hidden jungle.
