Making a Portrait Using natural light
2
Portraits- RULE OF THIRDS
Divide image into thirds, by drawing two lines horizontally and two lines vertically- imagine a Tic-tac-toe board! The points of focus should fall on the lines… Let the main focus point fall on the intersection of lines to really make an impact!
3
RULE OF THIRDS Eyes on upper third, body falls on line
Having the eye at the intersection Body falls on line, face points inward, eyes upper third BAM! What more do I need to say??
4
Portraits- framing FRAMING: Surrounds subject on two or more sides
Sets the scene draws viewer into image, creates emphasis Gives the photo context- says something about subject- background information Gives images depth and visual layers- in essence framing a shot generally puts something in the foreground which adds an extra dimension to the shot Leads the eye toward your main focal point- also keeps people interested longer! Use lines in the environment to naturally bring the eye toward your subject!
5
People surrounding subject draw your attention inward and curb the eye from leaving
PORTRAITS - FRAMING Being playful and using what you have with you! What a great portrait! Successful here because of lighting, and cropping. Taking a step back to see what you can include in your composition can create a great result
6
PORTRAITS- CLOSE UPS CLOSE- UPS : Give your subject the emphasis
Adds an element of intimacy, insight into another person’s world and emotions Use shallow DEPTH OF FIELD to accentuate subject and soften rest of image detail, less distractions Change your angles- don’t go for the obvious Watch out for distracting backgrounds- crop them out of your shot or blur them into sweeping values or colors
7
PORTRAITS- CLOSE UPS Great job cropping girl’s face, rules of thirds, suggestion of road stretching out before her Great vantage point! Think about where you stand as the photographer…change your angles A majestic look off into the distance, soft highlights no going wrong Backlit portrait adds framing as well as visual warmth and whimiscal feeling

Great shots… Nice ¾ profile, great shallow DOF artistic blur
Gagan Dhiman. “Night life” Here girl is framed by trees, play on shallow DOF with blossoms in front and back blurred…3/4 profile is flattering- protective pose, watch the hands…advise the model if necessary

Your assignment -----You will turn in two portraits of your classmates----- They will both be using SHALLOW Depth of field, and the rule of thirds in your composition… 1. close up- any part of face, any vantage point (above/below) profile/straight on, any use of props (hats/scarves/glasses/etc) 2. framing- any part of upper body, any use of props (as above)
10
Have a blast and go take some pictures- remember, the LIGHT is your FRIEND!
Killer vantage point and use of contrast- may have to manipulate the light (blocks/reflectors) to do this; sky saturated in Photoshop.
