Rise of New Industries AUTOMOBILE Ended isolation of rural life Allowed for suburbs Inspired cross-country travel (Rt. 66) Caused new businesses – gas stations, repair shops, motels, shopping centers Became a status symbol AIRLINES Began use for delivering mail faster Popularity and TRUST grew Transatlantic flights – Lindbergh and Earhart By 1928 – 48 airliners serving 355 cities

How/Why did they buy it all?! 35% average pay increase (annual income average from $522 to $705) Important to keep up with everyone else Explosion of purchasing with credit ◦Economy so good they trusted getting loans ◦Large items usually paid with installment plans ◦This will later be an issue
