3 Dialogue A One moment, please Wang Fang is the secretary of a shoe factory. She is phoning the Business Design Center in Beijing. She wishes to arrange a meeting between Mr. Li, her manager, and Mr. Smith, who is in charge of an exhibition. Operator: Business Design Center. Good morning. Can I help you? Wang: May I speak to Mr. Smith, please? Operator: Who is calling, please? Wang: This is Miss Wang from Shanghai No.1 Shoe Factory. I'm phoning from Shanghai. Operator: One moment, please. (pause) Wang: Hello? Operator: I'm trying to connect you. Hold the line, please. Operator: Hello, Miss Wang, you're through. Mr. Smith's number is ringing. Wang: Thank you.

B. This Is Mr. Smith Here Now Wang Fang is speaking to Mr. Smith on the phone. Mr. Smith: Hello, this is Mr. Smith here. Miss Wang: Good morning, Mr. Smith. This is Wang Fang. I work for Shanghai No. 1 Shoe Factory. I'd like to make an appointment for our manager, Mr. Li, to meet you. It's about the shoe exhibition you're holding next month. Mr. Smith: Ah, yes. I would be happy to meet Mr. Li. Which day is convenient? Miss Wang: Mr. Li is arriving in Beijing on Thursday. That's the 17th. Mr. Smith: How about 2 o'clock? Miss Wang: That's all right. 5 Language Points I’m looking forward to seeing him at 2 on the 17 th, then. look forward to : 这里 to 是介词,故后面 跟名词或动名词 e.g. I’m looking forward to hearing from you soon. I’m looking forward to seeing you.

6 Useful expressions Receiving a call May I ask who is calling? This is Miss Wang, I’m trying to connect you. Hold the line. Making a call Hello, this is (Mr. Li) speaking. Could I speak to (Miss Wang), please?

Dialing the wrong number I’m sorry, nobody by that name lives here. I’m afraid you’ve dialed a wrong number. Taking or Leaving a message I’m afraid Mr. Li is out at the moment. Would you like to leave a message? Could you tell him I called? No, thanks. I’ll call him later. 7

10 Word usage arrange v. : to plan in advance; prepare e.g. The meeting is arranged for Saturday morning. Everything is so far arranged. center n. a middle part or appoint e.g. This is the shopping center of the city. Beijing is the political, economic and cultural center of China. v. to gather to a center e.g. Our thoughts center on the young girl about to get married.

Background Information When one arranges to see someone at a fixed time, one makes an appointment. If one then actually sees the person as arranged, one is said to keep the appointment. If it will be impossible to meet after all, one should write or telephone to cancel the appointment. 11

12 Word usage connect v.: to join; unite 连接 to join by telephone 给 … 接通电话 e.g. The two cities are connected by a railway. Please connect me with Beijing. necessary adj.: that must be had or obtained; needed e.g. Food is necessary for life. It’s necessary for him to do it.

13 arrive v. : to reach a place, esp. the end of a journey e.g. we arrived home late. arrival n. the act of arriving e.g. On my arrival home I was greeted by my friend. delay n. : the act of delaying or the state of being delayed e.g. Do it at once without delay. v. to put off until later e.g. We want to delay our holiday until next week.

mention v. to tell about in a few words, spoken or written e.g. He mentioned his interest in sports. “Thank you.” “Don’t mention it”. prevent v. to keep sth. from happening or existing e.g. These rules are to prevent accidents. We want to prevent him going. efficient adj.: working well and without waste e.g. Our efficient new machines are much cheaper to run. 14

Notes to passages It’s useful to know the extension number of the person you are calling. 句中 it 为形式主语,它指代真正的主语不定式 “to know the extension number of the person you are calling, 故此句可改写为 To know the extension… is useful. 但 这种写法使主语 to know 与谓语分割开来,不便于理解 ,故在主语的位置上使用了形式主语 it ,而把真正的主 语放到谓语之后,以达到句子结构的平衡。英语中, 动词不定式短语作主语大多采用这一结构。 e.g. It’s important to do it at once. 15
