 1.2- Displacement, Distance, Velocity, Speed, Acceleration o Displacement- a vector measure of the interval between two locations measured along the shortest path connecting them o Distance- measure of the interval between two locations o Velocity- rate and direction of the change in the position of an object o Speed- the rate at which an object covers distance o Acceleration- the change in velocity over a unit of time  1.4- Newton's Three Laws of Motion o Every object in a state of uniform motion tends to remain in that state of motion unless an external force is applied to it. o The direction of the force vector is the same as the direction of the acceleration vector o For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction  1.7- Newton’s Law of Universal Gravitation o Any two bodies in the universe attract each other with a force that is directly proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them

Support force: The upward force that completely balances an object’s weight at rest. 0.30g - 0.30g= 0g 0.20g – 0.20g= 0g 0.40g – 0.40g= 0g

 Speed: how fast something is moving in a unit of time o The ball inside our ride moves at a certain speed  Weight: the force on a body due to gravitational attraction of another body (commonly Earth) o The balls that are used in the ride have different weights, affecting the average speed for each ball  Distance: amount of space between two objects or points o How much space the ball covers as it goes up and down the tube is how distance is applied in our ride

 Speed= distance/time  Example: o A horse runs nine miles in three minutes o 9 miles/3 minutes o The horse can run three miles in one minute

 The following slides are the data for the average speeds of three different types of balls that were used inside the ride to make a variable  They were: o A small styrofoam ball o A small orange pom pom o A large yellow pom pom

Orange Pom Pom: Mass=0.30g TrialTimeDistance (height of tube) 13.56 sec26 cm 22.86 sec26 cm 34.28 sec26 cm Average Time: 3.57sec (rounded to hundredth) Average Speed: 7.28 cm/sec (rounded to hundredth)

TrialTimeDistance (height of tube) 13.88 sec26 cm 24.38 sec26 cm 36.03 sec26 cm Yellow Pom Pom: Mass= 0.40g Average Time: 4.76 sec(rounded to hundredth) Average Speed: 5.46 cm/sec (rounded to hundredth)

TrialTimeDistance (height of tube) 18.41 sec26 cm 28.31 sec26 cm 38.03 sec26 cm Small Foam Ball: Mass= 0.20g Average Time: 8.25 sec Average Speed: 3.15 cm/sec (rounded to hundredth)

Q: How Many Centimeters in a Meter? A: 100 Orange Pom Pom had an average speed of 7.28 cm/sec 7.28/100=0.0728 The orange pom pom can travel 0.0728 m/sec Yellow pom pom had an average speed of 5.46 cm/sec 5.46/100=0.0546 The yellow pom pom can travel 0.0546 m/sec Styrofoam ball had an average speed of 3.15 cm/sec 3.15/100=0.0315 The Styrofoam ball can travel 0.0315 m/sec

Q: How Many Centimeters in a foot? A: 30.48 Orange Pom Pom had an average speed of 7.28 cm/sec 7.28/30.48=0.23884514 The orange pom pom can travel 0.23884514 ft/sec Yellow pom pom had an average speed of 5.46 cm/sec 5.46/30.48=0.17913386 The yellow pom pom can travel 0.17913386 ft/sec Styrofoam ball had an average speed of 3.15 cm/sec 3.15/30.48=0.10334646 The Styrofoam ball can travel 0.10334646 ft/sec
