Warm Up On a sheet of paper answer the following questions, then put it in the hand it in bin. This will be your first classwork grade. 1: Name two safety features in the room and tell me when you would use it 2: What would you do if you were absent? 3: What do we do if there is a fire drill? 4: Tell me one thing you learned about Mrs. Hallman

Measurement

Objective : (from the board)Date: Headings Main Ideas Vocabulary Questions to summarize material Questions for teacher Notes: Warm Up Notes from the teacher Textbook notes Powerpoint Definitions Charts Academic doodling Summary: Summary in your own words (3-5 sentences) 5 cm ( 3 fingers) 5 lines

International System of Units (SI) the metric system Standard way to make measurements Based on the number 10 Ex. 10 millimeter = 1centimeter =.1 decimeter

How do you measure length?

Length – the distance between two points Equipment – ruler Base unit – meter (m) Length of notebook paper = 26.5 cm Width of your notebook paper? Length of your hand? Width of your hand?

What is volume? Volume is the amount of space that matter occupies

Volume Liquid Use a graduated cylinder or beaker Base unit is a liter Small volumes like a drop of water = 1 mL Volume of a can of soda = 355 mL Solid Rectangular solids: Volume = Length x width x height V = l x w x h

Volume of an irregularly shaped solid (displacement) 1.Measure the volume of water in a graduated cylinder 2.Add the object 3.Measure the new water level 4.Subtract the first volume from the second to get the volume of the rock. 75 mL -50 mL 25 mL = volume of the rock

Mass vs Weight Mass Amount of matter in an object Equipment – triple beam balance Weight A measure of the force of gravity acting on an object Equipment – spring scale Units – newton (N) Weight changes as gravity changes Basic unit - gram (g) Triple beam balance measures in grams Mass does not change with a change in gravity

Measuring Practice Lab 1. At each station, list the name of the object. 2. Measure the mass of each object. 3.Record it in the data table. 4.Measure the volume of each object either by volume displacement or by measuring and multiplying its length, width and height. When you have finished – turn your lab paper in and write a 3-5 sentence summary of your Cornell notes in the summary section (at the bottom).

Warm Up 1.Draw the Cornell Notes template. 2.Copy the objective into your notebook 3.Copy the chart and fill in the blanks. MeasurementDefinitionEquipmentUnits Solid Volume Liquid Volume Mass Weight
