How to Construct Data Tables and Graph Your Data Proper Methods for Basic Lab Skills
2
Types of Variables Controlled Variable ▫These are constant through any trials done in an experiment. Manipulated Variable ▫This is the variable that the experiment changes in order to get a result ▫This variable will ALWAYS go on the x-axis when graphing Responding Variable ▫This is the variable that is measured. It is the response to the change in the manipulated variable ▫This variable will ALWAYS go on the y-axis when graphing
3
On your white boards, please construct a data table to record data about the time (in seconds) a marble takes to fall a given height (in cm – measured with a meter stick). You do NOT need to record data, just set up your table with the relevant information.
4
Basic Components of Data Tables Table 1: Time a Marble Takes to Fall from a Given Height Title & # → Height (± 0.05 cm) Time (± 0.05 s) Trial 1Trial 2Trial 3 10.000.140.110.13 20.000.230.260.25 30.000.470.500.49 40.001.000.950.98 50.001.621.63 60.002.052.032.04 ↓ Column Headings ↓ ↑ Trials ↑ No Calculations (Decimals Aligned!) (Not even averages) Absolute → Uncertainty ← Units!

On your white boards, please construct a graph that depicts the distance (in meters) a bike travels in a given time (in seconds). You do NOT need to graph points, just set up your graph.
6
Basic Components of Graphs Graph 1: The Displacement a Bicycle Travels With Time Displacement (m) Time (s) Title & # → ↑ Label Each Axis! → A note on uncertainties: If you measured this quantity, include them If you calculated this quantity, don’t include them

Now plot the following data on your graph and draw a proper line for the data set. Time (s)Displacement (m) 1040 2590 4070 50130 6575 80160 85140 95210 Table 1: The Displacement a Bicycle Travels With Time

Graphing Data Displacement (m) Time (s) Clear Data Points ← Best Fit Line/Curve! Graph 1: The Displacement a Bicycle Travels With Time Scales! ↑ →
9
Types of Graphs: Linear
10
Types of Graphs: Quadratic
11
Types of Graphs: Exponential
12
Time (s) Calculating the Slope Graph 1: The Displacement a Bicycle Travels With Time Displacement (m) Point 1: (12,40) Point 2: (40,80)

Displacement (m) Writing an Equation for Your Line Graph 1: The Displacement a Bicycle Travels With Time Time (s) Intercept: (0,30) x → t y → d

On Formal Lab Reports EVERYTHING needs to be computer processed: ▫Graphs (LoggerPro inserted into Word) ▫Tables (Word, Excel) ▫Equations (Word Equations, Microsoft Equations, Open Office Equations)
