1 Warm Up: Write the word “Relationships” in the middle of your index card/journal (blank side/page) and then write as many words as you can think of that pertain to relationships.

2 Healthy Relationships GROUP ACTIVITY With your group, write the characteristics of what a healthy and unhealthy relationship would look like.

4 Healthy Relationships EQ: How can we build and maintain relationships that fulfill our basic needs?

5 Relationship: A bond or connection you have with other people 1) Family Relationships 2) Friendships 3) Community Relationships  Citizenship: The way you conduct yourself as a member of the community

6 3 Components of Relationships 1.Intimacy -Close or warm friendship -Feeling of being intimate and belonging together Deep Mental connection to another person Build bonds with this person (Time + Effort = Connection)

7 2.Passion -A powerful emotion, such as love, joy, hatred, or anger -Strong sexual desire; lust. Physical attraction to another person (Can be based on more than just looks!)

8 3.Commitment -A pledge to do something -The state of being bound emotionally or intellectually to another person. Lifelong relationships

9 Types of Relationships The 3 components go together to create 8 different types of relationships

18 3 C’s for Building Relationships 1.COOPERATION: Working together for the good of everyone. 2.COMPROMISE: Problem solving method that involves each participant giving up something to reach a solution that satisfies everyone. 1.COMMUNICATION: Ways of sending and receiving messages.

19 Friendship—A significant relationship between two people Attributes:  similar values, interests, beliefs, and attitudes on basic issues  open and honest communication  sharing of joys, disappointments, dreams, and concerns  mutual respect, caring, and support  concern about each other’s safety and well being

20 Family Family: Basic unit of society 2 Functions:  Provide a developmental environment  Basic unit of social support

21 7 Types of Family 1.Nuclear- Mom Dad Kids

22 2. Single-Parent- Mom OR Dad Kids

23 3. Blended- Mom OR Dad Step-mom or dad Step-siblings Siblings

24 4. Extended- Mom Dad Kids Other relatives

25 5. Adoptive- Mom Dad Kids Adopted kids (Permanent)

26 6. Foster- Mom Dad Kids Foster kids (Temporary)

27 7. Other- Any combination of people living together in one household.

28 Relationships/Family paragraph -5 sentences What is your family unit? How does your family unit influence your behaviors and goals? How does your relationship with your family unit affect your daily life? Peer Feedback: Exchange paragraphs with a partner and share one positive and one improvement.

29 Relationship Paragraph (5 sentences) Write about a significant relationship (good or bad) in your life… How does this relationship affect your daily life? Which of the 8 triangles would it fall under and why? How can you build/maintain intimacy in this relationship?

30 Relationship Evaluation Give your self 1 point if you:  Answered YES to the following questions: # 2, 3, 4, 6, 9, 11, 12, 13, 14  Answered NO to the following questions: # 1, 5, 7, 8, 10

31 Scores… 1-3: There are few constructive elements in this relationship. You may want to think about your reasons for continuing the relationship, or work toward improving it. 4-6: This relationship has problems that might be resolved by working on honesty and communication. 7-10: There is the basis for a good relationship. Focus on the positive elements and work on improving the destructive ones. 10-14: You're doing well and have what it takes to build a successful and satisfying relationship.

32 Wrap Up 3-2-1 Answer on your index card and be prepared to hand it in 3 Components of a Healthy Relationship 2 Functions of a Family 1 Type of Love and an example of that type of love
