2. American History By Judith Ortiz Cofer In this presentation I will be summarizing the reading American History and enumerate the main elements of this story.

3. Settin  This story takes place in a building called “the building” in New Jersey. It is the time that President Kennedy was shot.

4. Caracters  Elena  Eugene  Elena’s mother

5. The Plot  Elena tells her life at the time in the history when the president Kennedy was shot. She was in ninth grade in public school number 13. She lived in a bustling neighborhood for low-income persons named “El Building” in Paterson New Jersey. She liked to spend time looking out the window at a nearby apartment where a Jewish couple moved. There live Eugene. And Elena is very interest in him.  After achieving speak and share their love of books finally they cited for study at Eugen’s apartment.

6. The conflict  But tragedy occurs that the president was kill. The Neighborhood was very quiet. Elena’s mother says “You are going out today” and Elena says that she has to study for a test.  Her mother tries to avoid humiliation and says “you are heading for humiliation and pain” because she knew the contempt that the Eugene’s family had for inmigrants.  Elena goes Eugene’s home anyway. There a woman received in a bad way. She ask if elena lived there, pointing the building. Elena says yes I do. The woman said “I don’t know how you people do it. Listen, honey. Eugene doesn’t want to study with you. He is a smart boy. Doesn’t need help. You understand me.  She returned to her house which was empty. They were all in different places of mourning for the assassination of the President. That night she slept in her bed trying to understand the sad events which was going. The president’s dead and her disappointment of Eugene’s family.
