SPACE ANALYSIS: *ORIENTATION AND SITE CONDITIONS OF SPACE *FORM, SCALE, AND PROPORTION OF SPACE *DOORWAY LOCATIONS, POINTS OF ACCESS, AND THE CIRCULATION PATHS THEY SUGGEST *WINDOWS AND THE LIGHT,VIEWS, AND VENTILATION THEY AFFORD *WALL, FLOOR, AND CEILING MATERIALS *SIGNIFICANT ARCHITECTURAL DETAILS. -EACH FUNCTIONAL GROUP OF FURNITURE -ACCESS TO AND MOVEMENT WITHIN AND BETWEEN ACTIVITY AREAS -NUMBER OF PEOPLE SERVED -APPROPRIATE SOCIAL DISTANCES AND INTERACTIONS DIMENSIONAL REUQIREMENTS: *DETERMINE REUQIRED DIMENSIONS FOR SPACE

PLAN ARRANGEMENTS From the preceding activity and space analyses, one can begin to match the space requirements of each activity to the characteristics of the available spaces. The design task then shifts to selecting furnishings, finishes, and lighting and arranging them into three- dimensional patterns within the given spatial boundaries. These arrangements of shapes and forms in space should respond both to functional and aesthetic criteria. *activity –specific grouping of furniture *workable dimensions and clearances *appropriate social distances *suitable visual and acoustical privacy *adequate flexibility or adaptability *appropriate lighting and other building services FUNCTION

B. SPACE PLANNING

ADJACENCY MATRIX IDENTIFIES PROXIMITY REQUIREMENTS FOR A RESIDENCE AND INTERDEPARTMENTAL COMMUNICATIONS FOR A COUNSELING CENTER.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM DEFINING THE PROGRAM THEFINAL STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM IS THE SUM TOTAL OF WAHT IS AGREED UPON BY THE CLIENT AND THE PROGRAMMER,AND REFLECTS THE MOST IMPORTANT ASPECTS OF THE PROJECT,SERVING AS THE BASIS FOR INITIATING THE DESIGN PROCESS. IN SMALL PROJECTS,THE PROGRAM DOCUMENT MAY BE PRODUCED IN AN INFORMAL FORMAT THAT IS MAINLY INTENDED FOR USE BY THE DESIGNER AS AN INTERNAL TOOL. A.GOALS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE ORGANIZATION.THESE CONSIST OF BOTH FUNCTIONAL GOALS AND AESTHETIC GOALS B.ORGANIZING STRUCTURE, INCLUDING PRIMARY,SECONDARY,SHARED AND PART-TIME ACTIVITIES SUCH AS CONFERENCE /MEETING ROOMS, COPY AREAS,KITCHEN/REA AREAS AND RECEPTION AREAS. C.USER REQUIREMENTS,INCLUDING DETERMINATION OF USER CHARACTERISTICS AND DEMOGRAPHICS (AGE-SEX-PHYSICAL DISABILITIES),NUMBER AND FUNCTION OF EMPLOYEES AND GROUPS- CURRENT AND FUTURE-PERSONAL PREFERENCES AND LOCATION OF USER OR ACTIVITY SPACE.

SCHEMATIC DESIGN DEVELOPING PRELIMINARY SPACE ALLOCATIONS BUBLE AND BLOCKING / STACKING DIAGRAMS BUBLE DIAGRAM FOR SHOWING FUNCTIONAL RELATIONSHIPS AND APPROXIMATE SPACE ALLOCATION

The schematic space plan takes the bubble and blocking/stacking diagrams to the next level of detail and sophistication. When the area assignment is complete, the space planner proceeds to develop a space layout that reflects the program’s stated requirements and objectives. Functional elements are located within the space in a format consistent with the program’s goals and objectives while retaining the desired adjacencies and functions. While the schematic space plan is being developed, the design team simultaneously Works on preliminary design concepts for interior architectural elements, finishes and furniture. *It should be noted that blocking/stack plans lack detailed information regarding the activities and space layout within the organization. This comes at a larger stage the development of the design, it should be presented to the client for review, modification and final approval, before proceeding to the next phase, of design development.

(1)BLOCK PLANS LOCATE SUPPORT AREAS IN CLOSE PROXIMITY TO ALLOW MAXIMUM FLEXIBILITY FOR SPACE PLANNING THE DIVISIONS. (2) STACKNIG PLANS LOCATE SERVICE AREAS ON THE GROUND LEVEL FOR ACCESS AND STRUCTURAL CAPACITY ON GRADES.

BUBLE DIAGRAMS THE NEXT STEP MUST BE TO ENSURE THE BEST POSSIBLE INTER-RELATION BETWEEN THE VARIOUS FUNCTIONAL AREAS. A SPACE PLANNER MUST FIRST GET A FEELING FOR THE SPACES HE/SHE PLANS TO DESIGN. A BUBLE DIAGRAM HELPS TO DETERMINE THE BEST RELATIONSHIP OF THE VARIOUS AREAS. A SPACE THAT SERVES NO PHYSICAL OR PSYCHOLOGICAL FUNCTION SHOULD BE ELIMINATED BECAYSE IT IS WASTED SPACE. THE BUBLE DIAGRAM SHOULD ALSO REFLECT THE RELATIVE SIZES OF THE VARIOUS SPACES. THIS IS TRUE WHETHER WE ARE DESIGNING A K-MULTISTORY SKYSCRAPER A BUNGOLOW OR A SIMPLE PIECE OF FURNITURE. A BUBBLE DIAGRAM HELPS THE DESIGNER ACHIEVE THE BEST SOLUTION POSSIBLE FROM A FUNCTIONAL STANDPOINT.
