How does music add to the film? Music makes you feel empathy for the characters Empathy: sharing another person’s feelings or emotions; putting yourself in their shoes Think about when a character is being chased. The music plays in the background, and you feel more scared yourself. Or if a character wins a great victory (a battle, or a race), then you start to feel happy or proud. Music foreshadows what’s going to happen next. Foreshadow: suggesting actions or events before they happen Think about a scary movie. Usually the music gets very fast and loud right before the killer strikes!

How it all began… Movies have existed for 100+ years. Some of the earliest movies were: –Voyage to the Moon (1902) –The Great Train Robbery (1903) These movies were known as “silent films” because they had no sound (music, dialogue, or sound effects).

The Silent Film To make the silent film more interesting, a live pianist or organist sat next to the screen, watched the action, & made up music on the spot. The music that he used was based on moods. (ex: fear, love, humor, anger) The trick was to watch the film, then match the music with the appropriate mood.

Film Scoring By the 1920s an entire orchestra had replaced the keyboardist. The large # of musicians made it hard to improvise. Soon a composer (someone who writes music) single- handedly took on the task of making up music to fit the movie. He became known as the film’s music director. Again, his job is to score the film. Film scoring means “to compose music specifically for a film.” The music that is written for a film is called a soundtrack. This is synchronized with the action and dialogue of the film.

The Process of Scoring a Film 1.Spot the music Spotting is “determining which scenes should have music 2.Compose the music, and record it using a “click-track.” T he music director records the orchestra in front of a large screen depicting the edited film. The click-track “allows him to synchronize the orchestra’s playing to the film.” 3. Dubbing Dubbing is “putting all the elements of sound—dialogue, sound effects, and music—onto one soundtrack.” Have you ever seen a movie where the talking does not line up with the person’s lips?

Who is most famous for scoring films? John Williams Born in 1932 Learned to play piano, trombone, trumpet, & clarinet Age 16, moved to Los Angeles, where his dad played drums in films.
