The Flipped Classroom John Towers Long Beach City School District Molloy College – Class of ‘06, ‘09
2
What is the “Flipped Classroom?” Students watch video lesson at home; students then work collaboratively on guided practice, hands-on activities in class IT IS NOT: watch a video at home, do homework in class!!! Student becomes responsible for knowledge and understanding of content with support of teachers and peers
3
The Flipped Lesson: The Video Video less allows for pre-knowledge of content topics to be done at home low level of Bloom's taxonomy "Cut out the fat of lesson instruction." Video itself should not be more than 10 minutes in length Teacher can check for student understanding through: "Do Now" activity HW Check “Clicker" activity Student polls
4
The Flipped Lesson: In Class In class, students work on materials that enhance the elements of the video lesson Increase level of Bloom’s taxonomy Allows for teacher and peer support Peer teaching occurs within the traditional class time Creation of student-centered learning environment Teacher can truly differentiate based upon student needs
5
Why Flip? Students learn at different paces Never enough instructional time (42-45 minute periods) Students may miss important information in a lesson even if in traditional classroom setting Students who are absent from class can stay on pace Limited amount of guided practice time during traditional class setting
6
The Results… Increased student understanding and engagement Similar to pre-reading of text prior to lecture Increased class time for critical thinking problems Promote 21 st century learning and skills Student-centered learning environments Collaboration with peers More one-on-one time with students in class What Teachers are Saying...
