3. The Los Lagos Region, which includes Chiloé Island off Chile’s central coast, marks the northern reaches of the kelp goose’s habitat. This beach-dwelling bird dines on several varieties of its namesake sea vegetation. And in an unusual spin on gender-specific plumage, the male has plain white feathers while the female sports brown plumes with nifty gray pinstripes. With most bird species, the male has flashy, decorative feathers so he can attract the attention of females.
