It is usually divided into lines and stanzas instead of sentences and paragraphs, but usually grammar rules still apply. CHARACTERISTICS CHARACTERISTICS: 1.Lines / Stanzas: Lines make up a stanza and can vary from two (couplets) to four (quatrain) or more. Lines are made up of “feet” and each “foot” is a syllable of sound. 2.Figurative language: Poems often engage the senses and emotions using imagery, comparative language (similes, metaphors, analogies), allusions, onomatopoeia, kennings, and other literary devices. 3.Sound patterns: Poems also engage readers using repetition of letters (alliteration, assonance), repetition of sounds (assonance, consonance), patterns of sound (arrangement of “feet” and “meters” of sound). This produces the rhythm of poetry. ACTIVITIES ACTIVITIES: 1) Video & Text Notes, 2) Apply the characteristics of poetry to song lyrics, 3) Quiz MON!!
