How to answer Paper 1 The Move to Global War
2
Details You have 5 minutes reading time before the time starts The paper is 1 hour long The paper has 4 documents and 4 questions It is marked out of 24 (SL and HL the same)
3
Before your start to write During the 5 minutes reading time you must: ➡ Look at the questions especially question 4 ➡ Work out the Ws (What is it, Who wrote it, When, Where, Why?) for each of the documents before you read them ➡ Read the documents
4
Question 1 The question is in 2 parts and is a comprehension question For part (a) you get 3 marks for finding 3 separate points to answer the question from the source For part (b) you get 2 marks usually for stating the message of the cartoon and supporting this with evidence from the source
5
1a) What does source A suggest about Lloyd George’s attitude towards French security? 3 marks What does the Mark Scheme say? 1. Britain and the US should give a guarantee to France against German aggression; 2. This is needed because France has been attacked and invaded twice by Germany in half a century; 3. Western democracies should protect France against German invasion until the League of Nations has proved its capacity to preserve peace. 4. France should be protected as she had protected democracy. Award 1 mark for each relevant point up to a maximum of three points

Question 2 In this question you are asked to find the Origin, Purpose, Content, Value and Limitations (OPCVL) of one source You must imagine that you are an Historian trying to find out about the past from this source. How valuable and how limited are they in helping you? Do not evaluate the content. Base your answer on the origin, purpose and content.
7
OPCVL Origin - the origin of the source is where it comes from. Look at the information and write this in you answer. This source is a memo (memorandum) written by Lloyd George in 1919.
8
Purpose Purpose - the purpose of the source is why it was created or written. Look at the origin to help you to decide. Go through the Ws in your head. Consider the audience. Read the source carefully
9
Content The content is what the source is about or what is says You need to read the source carefully and then write a short summary of the key points If it is a book, check the title. If it is a visual, look carefully at all aspects of the picture Rad and summarise the content. What is the source about?
10
Value The Value of the source must be considered as ‘What is the value of the source to an Historian’ and the answer must be based on the Origin and Purpose.
11
Limitation The Limitation of the source must be considered as ‘What is the limitation of the source to an Historian?’ and the answer must be based on the origin and purpose.
12
