2 American band that formed in 1965 Band members: Jim Morrison – Vocals Ray Manzarek – Keyboard John Densmore – Drums Robby Krieger – Guitar Considered among the most controversial acts in Rock in the 1960’s

3 Beginnings of the band were rather coincidental Morrison and Manzarek were both alumni of UCLA film school Morrison began to write music and shared it with Manzarek who was in another band with his brothers. Decided to record some demos.

4 Began to play clubs in Los Angeles Were signed to a record deal by Elektra Records First album was self-titled and was released in 1967 Were fired from their LA club when Morrison went on an LSD inspired profanity rant

5 More Controversy Booked for Ed Sullivan Were asked to change a lyric from “higher” to “better” Initially agreed, but in the live show sang the original Sullivan was very angry and cancelled six other performances they had booked with the band.

6 Their musical style doesn’t fit neatly into a particular genre Closest fit is “psychodelic rock.” Had a history of strange performances and bizarre outbursts on stage After one performance in Miami, Morrison faced obscenity charges

7 After their third album, Morrison quit and moved to Paris with his girlfriend Found dead in his bathtub on July 3, 1971 No autopsy, but speculation that he died of a heroin overdose.

9 English band that formed in 1964 Members were: Roger Daltrey (vocals); Peter Townshend (guitar); John Entwistle (bass); and Keith Moon (drums) Became known for performances that involved destroying their instruments.

10 Entwistle and Townshend worked together in a jazz band, The Confederates. Daltrey met Entwistle much by accident and invited him to join Daltrey’s band, The Detours Entwistle suggested the bring Daltrey into the band.

11 The Detours changed their name to The Who in 1964 Were very successful in England. First hit in UK was “I Can’t Explain” Followed up with several successful albums in England.

12 First successful U.S. album is released in 1965 – My Generation First performances in the U.S. come in 1967 at the Brooklyn Fox Theater Later that year they play the Monterrey Festival in California

13 An accident at a concert – Townshend broke one of his guitars The crowd must have thought it was on purpose Became a signature of their performances They were very successful Over 100 million albums sold 27 Top 40 singles 17 Top 10 albums
