4 What is the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards? (NBPTS) Nonpartisan, independent and nonprofit organization Created in 1987 in response to a “rising tide of mediocracy” Advocating education reforms in America The profession’s vehicle for defining and recognizing accomplished teaching

7 NBCTs as Teacher Leaders According to the ongoing NBCT Census: (54%) are working as team leaders (36%) are department chairs (15%) are staff developers and coaches NBCTs are also serving as principals, superintendents, state government officials, state departments of education staff and college faculty

8 Teacher Continuum Goal: To strengthen teaching that leads from pre-service teacher preparation to accomplished practice, which then leads to a variety of leadership roles within the profession.

21 What is the National Board Certification Process?

22 National Board Certification is a voluntary advanced professional certification for PreK-12 educators that identifies teaching expertise and excellence through a performance-based, peer- reviewed assessment.

23 What are the requirements? Candidates must have: Three years experience Bachelor’s Degree Valid Professional Colorado Teaching License

24 Teachers must complete 4 components within a 3 year period Receive a certifiable score National Board Certification is the only way in the state of Colorado to get a Master Teacher certificate from CDE. Process:

25 The Design of the National Board Process

26 General Descriptions of Components Component 1: Content Knowledge Demonstrate knowledge of and pedagogical practices for teaching your content area. Component 2: Differentiation in Instruction Comprised of samples of student work and an accompanying written commentary. Component 3: Teaching Practice and Learning Environment Requires video recording(s) of interactions between you and your students. You describe, analyze and reflect on your teaching and interactions. Component 4: Effective and Reflective Practitioner—coming out Fall 2016 Requires you to demonstrate evidence of how you assess and meet the needs of your students as a group and how you use your understanding of student needs over time to have a positive impact throughout your learning communities.

27 National Board Certificate Areas Art Career/Technical Education English as a New Language English Language Arts Exceptional Needs Specialist Generalist Health Library Media Literacy: Reading/Language Arts Mathematics Music Physical Education School Counseling Science Social Studies-History World Languages other than English Certificate areas are classified by developmental age categories: 3-8, 3–12, 3-18+, 7-12, 11- 15, 11-18+ and 14-18+.
