Aspen Glaciation Objective: –Be able to identify and distinguish local glacier features

Aspen Glaciation 4 KNOWN glacial periods –There could have been more Last 2mya- Glacial/interglacial period –Freeze/melt cycles Last glacier melted ~10,000 mya Montezuma Basin- last glacial remnants

Glacial Development Picture 1- Glacier 1 –Original Glacier filled in river valley with erosional sediments Called outwash Picture 2- Glacier 2 –Deeper valley made by Roaring Fork eroding the outwash –Each glacier created its own outwash plain Picture 3- Glacier 3 –Aspen Terrace is the largest outwash plain –3 rd glacier- never reached town Picture 4- Glacier 4 –All of these flats are outwash plains created by the river eroding the sediment

Outwash Plains Outwash is glacial till carried by Water.

Calculating Glacier Thickness 1. Find average elevation of lateral moraines –Contour lines 2. Find elevation of river valley 3. SUBTRACT lateral moraine (big) elevation from river valley (small) elevation

Rock Glaciers Rock on the outside - ice on the inside Can be found: –Pearl Pass –Pyramid Peak –Mnt Sopris
