Bill of Rights There have been 27 amendments to the Constitution First 10 amendments= Bill of Rights Federalist v anti-Federalist debate over the Constitution Bill of rights= Specific limits on government power

Why are rights important? Amendment #1: freedom of speech Amendment #1: freedom of the press Amendment #1: freedom of religion (belief and practice) Amendment #1: the separation of church and state Amendment #1: freedom to peaceably assemble (protest) Amendment #2: the right to bear arms (own and operate guns) Amendment #4: the right to privacy from unwarranted or illegal search and seizures of your property Amendment #5: eminent domain: protection against the government taking private property for public use without just compensation Amendment #5: the right to not have to testify against yourself (pleading the 5 th ) Amendment #6 and #7: the right to have a trial with a lawyer, and a jury that takes place in public Amendment #8: protection against cruel and unusual punishment

Why are rights important? Make sure people are protected/ safe Prevents conflict Protects minorities Keeps people happy

Why are rights important? They promote equality Protects people from being controlled by the government Gives people more power Ensures that people are respected, have freedom, gives choice
