Form a group of two or three people, be sure that at least one of you has a computer today! Go to SchoolSpace, and open up our class. Lessons Tab > Unit 1 > Citizenship Download the “So You’re 18 Pamphlet” Download the “So You’re 18 Power Point” Work with a partner to prepare to present your assigned slide. Using the pamphlet, you should be able to explain the statements and answer the questions presented. (everyone must speak) You will have 15-20 minutes to prepare your presentation.

Vote in national, state and local elections What are the voting requirements? Where do you vote? How and where to register? When to register? What if I am away at college or in the military? Run for certain elective offices

When can you enlist? What about the Selective Service? How to register with the selective service? What if I think I a exempt from the draft?

What are the qualifications? How are people called? If called, do you need to go? Can you be excused from jury duty? What if you are still in school? How long do you need to serve? Do you get paid? What if you need to miss work? How often can you be called?

Right or a privilege? Insurance? Traffic tickets?

Underage consumption? How serious is getting caught with a fake ID? What if others are consuming around you? What if you are caught drinking and driving? Does drunk driving only apply to cars and trucks? Can you lose your license before you are convicted?

Legally responsible for all of your actions What happens if charged with a crime after turning 18? What can you expect to hear from the arresting officer? What happens when arrested? What is the deal with being released on bail? What is the difference between a felony and a misdemeanor? What about a lawyer? Can you really get in trouble for “sexting”? What about using profanity? What if you can’t pay the fine?

Employment in all types of jobs What about working conditions? Can an employer tell you how to wear your hair? What if you don’t get paid? Can you be fired for any reason? When are you entitled to unemployment and workers’ compensation? What if you feel you have been discriminated against?

Enter into a contract What is a contract? Must all contracts be in writing? What if a contract is broken? You can sue and be sued

Apply for credit in your own name What is credit? How does a credit rating work? What is collateral? What are the dangers of credit cards? What does bankruptcy really mean?

What are your obligations as a tenant? What are the obligations of the landlord? Are security deposits necessary? What does that phrase, “jointly and severally liable” mean? Can the landlord enter the property any time he wishes?

Child support and medical bills related to children What is the legal aspect of marriage? Does marriage require a license? What obligations do parents have to their children? What if the parent is not married to the child’s other parent? What is meant by divorce? Do both sides need to agree to the divorce for it to take effect? Does the mother always get the children?
