1 Carbons on Catalyst CAUTION: Samples are hot when removed from the oven and furnace. Use heat resistant gloves when handling hot samples. 1Place at least 100 granules of lift engager catalyst into beaker. 2Pour approximately 10 mls of pentane into beaker. 3Swirl pentane around the catalyst at least 30 seconds. Let stand for 15 minutes. 4Dump out pentane and place beaker in brown oven for 15 minutes to dry the catalyst. 5Remove and place in desiccator for 1 hour. 6Proceed to run test. Gereighty39/10/072 of 2 Carbons on Catalyst (continued) Weighing of Samples 1Make sure that the samples boats are clean. 2Take out sample boat on balance (zero). 3Weigh 1.0000 grams of regenerator catalyst or 0.1000 grams of lift engager catalyst. 4Proceed to run test. Running Test 1Turn on oxygen cylinder in rear of lab. 2Make sure that valve is pointed towards back. 3Place boat in end of furnace tube. 4With left hand, take rod and slide the boat into the red zone of furnace. 5With right hand, place the cork with the oxygen tube on the end of furnace. 6Use gloves or towels and make sure cork forms a good seal on furnace tube. 7Open oxygen valve and start purging sample with oxygen. 8 Watch the pink side (tube) until the level gets even with the black line on the tube and then shut off the oxygen (approximately 1 minute). 9Place bottle on lower rack. 10Pull out cork from furnace tube. 11Level in the tube and the bottle should be even and on 0.00 (if not, adjust with the wheel on lower level until even). 12Move valve to the left and raise bottle and place into upper rack. 13Make sure the bubble locks in the pink tube and then move valve to front position. 14Wait 15 minutes. 15Grab bottle and lower in the left hand, then move valve back to the left position. 16Lower bottle with left hand until the bubble in the clean tube locks, then move valve to front position. 17Place bottle on lower rack and let the pink liquid in the tube stop rising (15 seconds).  Procedure Completed Date: Prepared By: Approved By:
