Chapter 4.2 Ionic Compounds Naming/Formula Writing Single valent and multivalent metals
2
Rules – Ionic compounds are always METAL + NON-METAL 1. Name the metal. If the metal is multivalent, use a roman numeral in brackets after the metal name to indicate the charge of the ion. 1. Name the non-metal and change its ending to -ide
3
Examples – Name the following compounds LiCl Mg 3 P 2 AlN Na 2 S
4
Examples – Naming compounds with multivalent metals Fe 2 O 3 CuO MnO 3 NiS You must mathematically determine the charge on the metal
5
Writing the formula of an Ionic compound Rules 1. Write the symbol of the metal with its ion charge as a superscript 2. Write the symbol of the non-metal with its ion charge as a superscript 3. Criss cross the charges so that they become subscripts for the opposite element and remove + or – signs 4. Simplify the subscripts if possible.
6
Example of formula writing Potassium nitride Magnesium sulfide Gallium phosphide
7
Examples of formula writing Copper (II) sulfide Chromium (III) carbide Vanadium (IV) chloride
