1 1.2- The Geographer’s Tools  Globe: Three-dimensional representation of the earth  Maps: Two-dimensional representation of the earth.  Tell a neighbor one advantage and one disadvantage of both a map and globe.

2 Parts of a Map  Title- Tells what the map is about  Key or Legend- Helps to show what symbols on the map mean  Compass Rose- Shows direction  Scale- Shows the ratio between the distance on the map and the actual distance on earth

3 Maps/Globes cont.  Cartographer: mapmaker that reduces distortion by using projections. Pg 18-19  Three types of maps: reference, thematic, and navigational. Pg 20-23  Surveying: First step in mapmaking  Gather data (satellites), then construct map

4 Satellites/ GIS/GPS  GOES: satellite that is used in weather models  GIS: digital database that used to help solve problems using information from several different sources.  Landsat: series of satellites that orbit the earth. Can scan the earth in 6 days  GPS: used to find exact position on the earth
