2. THE MEDIA IS A DRIVING FACTOR IN THE EPIDEMIC OF EATING DISORDERS AMONG YOUNG GIRLS.

3. PRINCESS DIANA  Went public about bulimia in the late 1990’s.  Diagnoses of bulimia skyrocketed following Diana’s confessions.  Began binging and purging after being called “pudgy”.  Feelings of emptiness within her marriage forced her to turn to food for comfort.

4. CHRISTINA RICCI  “For years, I hated myself. I covered the mirrors in my room.” –Ricci  Early introduction into the acting world caused low self esteem.  Combination of anorexia and depression.  Certified counselor for young girls.

5. KATE WINSLET  Open criticism about self image problems in Hollywood.  In American culture, women seem to diet every week.  “Hollywood is breeding a whole new generation of anorexics.” –Winslet.

6. MODELING INDUSTRY  Average model weighs 25% less than the average woman. -Eating Disorders and the Media  Editing techniques create unrealistic images.  Other countries are banning emaciated models. -USA TODAY  United States modeling industry needs improvement.

7. BULIMIA NERVOSA: WHAT IS IT?  Consume large quantities of food.  Harmful methods to rid stomach of contents.  Accompanied by other psychological disorders.

8. CAUSES OF BULIMIA  Social issues  Family environment  Abuse as a child  High pressure in school  Substance abuse

9. ANOREXIA NERVOSA: WHAT IS IT?  Starving  Compulsive exercising  Dieting pills  Body dysmorphia

10. CAUSES OF ANOREXIA  Need to compulsively control  Serotonin deficiency  Low self esteem  Psychological disorders  Family history

11. TREATMENT  Individual or family therapy  Inpatient or outpatient programs  Dietitian for eating plans  Health monitoring  Specialists

12. MISCONCEPTIONS  Anorexia and bulimia are all about food  These are healthy methods to lose weight  The disorder goes away after treatment  There aren’t long term health repercussions
