3. Less than a mile off the Normandy coast in northwestern France is the rocky island settlement Mont Saint-Michel. The centerpiece of the island is the Mont Saint-Michel Abbey, which traces its origins back to the early 8th century, when it was founded by Saint Aubert, the bishop of Avranches. Legend tells of the Archangel Michael appearing to Aubert in a vision, commanding him to build an oratory on the tidal island. At first the bishop ignored the archangel’s directives, but after three visions (!), Aubert finally accepted the commandment and finished the oratory in 709. Fortified and embellished over the succeeding centuries, the abbey was used periodically as a prison beginning in the 1400s. The prison finally closed in 1863 and after a period of restoration, the abbey again became a working monastery beginning in 1922. Monks continue to perform services in the abbey to this day. Tides can affect access to Mont-Saint Michel. When the tide is out, it’s possible to reach Mont- Saint Michel by crossing the muddy tide flats. But the island’s tourism office strongly advises against using any passage other than over the paved causeway, as a quickly rising tide is trouble for anyone stuck on the flats.
