Buildings Most buildings were churches or cathedrals Some castles were built, but were far outnumbered by churches Other buildings built in the middle ages include palaces, universities, town halls, guild halls, and occasionally private homes

Romanesque Style First style of architecture after Roman empire collapsed Combined Byzantine and Western Roman buildings Started around the year 500 Had thick walls and large towers Had many arches in the buildings that were semicircular rather than pointed Roofs were arched and semicircular and called Barrel or Tunnel vaults

Gothic Style Evolved from the Romanesque style of architecture Started around year 1100 Had many towers, wider windows, pointed arches, rib vaults and flying buttresses Very tall buildings Rib Vaults are several Barrel Vaults intersecting
