The CCSS Requires Three Shifts in ELA/Literacy 1. Building knowledge through content-rich nonfiction 2. Reading, writing and speaking grounded in evidence from text, both literary and informational 3. Regular practice with complex text and its academic language 16
17
Using the Publishers’ Criteria for ELA/Literacy to Better Understand Quality Instructional Materials

Document Organization Three sections: I.Key Criteria for Reading Foundations II.Key Criteria for Text Selections III.Key Criteria for Questions and Tasks 18 Grades K-2

Document Organization Four sections: I.Key Criteria for Text Selection II.Key Criteria for Questions and Tasks III.Key Criteria for Academic Vocabulary IV.Key Criteria for Writing to Sources and Research 19 Grades 3-12
20
Instructional Materials Evaluation Tool (IMET) This ELA/Literacy IMET is designed to help educators determine whether or not instructional materials are aligned to the Shifts and major features of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). The substantial instructional Shifts (www.corestandards.org/other-resources/key-shifts-in-english-language-arts/) at the heart of the Common Core State Standards are: ◦Complexity: Regular practice with complex text and its academic language ◦Evidence: Reading, writing, and speaking grounded in evidence from text, both literary and informational ◦Knowledge: Building knowledge through content-rich non-fiction
21
Non-Negotiable 1: Texts are worthy of student time and attention; they have the appropriate level of complexity for the grade, according to both quantitative and qualitative analyses of text complexity.
22
Non-Negotiable 2: At least 80% of all questions in the submission are high- quality text-dependent and text-specific questions. The overwhelming majority of these questions are text-specific and draw student attention to the text.
23
ELA Instructional Materials Scoring Rubrics by Topic and Grade Level 1.Range and quality of texts 2.Questions and tasks support student learning 3.Writing to sources and research 4.Foundational Skills 5.Language 6.Speaking and listening 7.Scaffolding and supports
24
What’s In and What’s Out? IN OUT 1.Leveled texts (only) 2.Reading any ‘ol text 3.Solely literature 4.Collection of unrelated texts 5.Mostly text-to-self questions 6.Mainly writing without sources 7.Accent on literary terminology 8.Emphasis on pre-reading 9.Reading strategies (as end goal) 10.Reading foundations (peripheral and detached) 1. Daily encounters w/complex texts 2. Texts worthy of close attention 3. Balance of literary and info texts 4. Coherent sequences of texts 5. Mostly text-dependent questions 6. Mainly evidence-based analyses 7. Accent on academic vocabulary 8. Emphasis on reading & re-reading 9. Reading strategies (as means) 10. Reading foundations (central and integrated)
25
It all boils down to... Texts Worth Reading and Questions Worth Answering!

MS Instructional Materials Priority Document Materials must be student centered and directed, allowing for student interaction, collaboration and reflection. Materials must be accessible to parents, students, and teachers and be user friendly. The materials must be aligned to the standards and there must be a fidelity to the materials, knowing ALL standards are addressed –beginning with the end in mind. The materials must reflect text complexity that supports higher levels of thinking as well as tasks that are text dependent.
