Business Family Education Retreat Series DECISION An all consuming question that begs for a decision by young professional family members in family companies is, “how do I know if I should joint my family business?” There are key inflection points in the life stage of business families and each of these stages raise critical questions for family members. PEERSHIP Is there any greater desire of successor family members than to feel like a professional peer with the senior generation. Their desire generates a critical inflection point question, “How do I move from a parent-child to a professional-peer relationship with my parents?” SUCCESSION Succession is like a multi- dimensional chess game - it's a series of moves over time that sequentially impact each other. This course will explore "the game" of succession and the critical inflection point question, “How do we design an effective succession process?” GROWTH Growth is the necessary condition for a trans- generational enterprising family. This course will explore the challenges and complexity of growth in the generational context of the family. The inflection point question, “How do we take the family business to the next stage of growth?” requires that families discover the “power of f” in wealth creation. The Babson Business Family Education Retreat series facilitates participants in proactively anticipating inflection point changes in their family firms. An inflection point represents a critical change moment. This retreat series uncovers inflection points by exploring four future state questions around Decision, Peership, Succession and Growth. The retreat generates reflection, conversation, collaboration, and execution outcomes around these questions.

Their desire generates a critical inflection point question, “How do I move from a parent-child to a professional-peer relationship with my parents?” This inflection point question is at the heart of leadership and the power of family in wealth creation and it raises a number of additional questions for reflection and conversation: How does peership create a “leadership to the power of f” in my family Business? What does it mean to be a professional peer with my parents? How do I build relationship capital in my family for long-term health? Are their skills I can develop to help me communicate more effectively? How do we develop a safe environment to have hard conversations with my family? What can I learn from my family DNA and history that will help me become a peer? Do I still act like a child? How do I get my parents to take me seriously and treat me like a peer? How do we create a self-coaching “family team”? How is peership related to succession? SUCCESSION SUCCESION Succession is like a multi-dimensional chess game - it's a series of moves over time that sequentially impact each other. This course will explore "the game" of succession and the critical inflection point question, “How do we design an effective succession process?” Succession is at the heart of discovering the power of family in long-term wealth creation and raises additional questions for reflection and conversation: What does “succession to the power of f” look like? How do you build a next generation pool of resources and capabilities? What does it mean to create a Parallel Universe succession process? How do you design a succession process for ownership and management? How do you transition the senior generation in succession? How do you empower the next generation through succession? How do you get rid of a “zero-sum-game” mindset in succession? What does governance have to do with a successful succession? The Inflection Point Question Course is a Friday/Saturday "family retreat" format that provides personalized coaching to participants based upon their individual family cases – family members are welcome to join students. The Goal is to stimulate deeper personal and professional Reflection…facilitate peer collegial Conversation…set participants up for Collaborative decision making in the family…and lead to an action plan for Execution by the students on their goals.

GROWTH Growth is the necessary condition for a trans-generational enterprising family. This course will explore the challenges and complexity of growth in the generational context of the family. The inflection point question, “How do we take the family business to the next stage of growth?” requires that families discover the “power of f” in wealth creation. The question of growth raises additional questions for reflection and conversation: Do you have a compelling multi-generational vision for growth? What is the difference between an enterprising family and traditional family business? What are the constraints to growth in your family business? How does the family context create a unique “entrepreneurship to the power of f”? What is your “power of f” familiness advance performance model? How does your governance support or constrain growth? How do your planning capabilities support growth? How do you align the family risk profile for growth? What do you do if family shareholders don’t want to grow (but don’t know it)? How do you establish an ownership strategic options continuum to support growth? The Inflection Point Question Course is a Friday/Saturday "family retreat" format that provides personalized coaching to participants based upon their individual family cases – family members are welcome to join students. The Goal is to stimulate deeper personal and professional Reflection…facilitate peer collegial Conversation…set participants up for Collaborative decision making in the family…and lead to an action plan for Execution by the students on their goals.
