Features of the industry: Objectives At the end of this lesson candidates should understand what is meant by travel and tourism. They should also be able to: 1)identify the main types of tourism 2)describe the main reason why people travel 3)explain the unique characteristics of the travel and tourism industry

4) give relevant up-to-date examples from the industry and use appropriate language and terms associated with travel and tourism

The nature of travel and tourism The scale of the travel and tourism industry

Objectives At the end of this lesson candidates should be able to investigate the scale of the industry at a local, national and international level. They should be able to analyse statistics, including: 1)consumer spending on travel and tourism 2) the number of people employed in the industry

3) the number of tourist arrivals in key destinations 4) the number of people taking holidays in their country. 5) draw conclusions about the scale of the industry locally, nationally and internationally as well as analyse trends

Objectives Candidates will need to demonstrate an understanding of the dynamic nature of travel and tourism. In particular, they need to understand the main factors that have led to the growth of the travel and tourism industry, including: 1)Changing socio-economic factors

2) technological developments 3) developments in ICT 4) product development and innovation

External factors contributing to the growth of travel and tourism: 1)legislations such as the EU Directive on Package Travel 2)the role of local authorities and government in travel and tourism 3)fluctuations in the currency

4) climatic change and natural disasters 5) war, civil unrest, terrorism and crime

Objectives Candidates need to know how these organizations work together to provide the “tourist experience”. They also need to show an appreciation of the different values and attitudes of different organizations- 1) commercial and non commercial and say:

1)how they meet and define their objectives 2)how they get funding and generate revenue 3)how they meet stakeholder or shareholder expectations. They will also need to look at agencies delivering Travel and tourism products and services.

They also need to understand, explain and give examples of the major features of the following components: 1)tourist attractions 2)accommodation and catering 3)tourism development and promotion

4) transportation 5) travel agencies 6) tour operators and the components of a package holiday

Objectives Candidates need to understand what is meant by “tourism development” and why it occurs in both the more economically- developed countries (MECDs) and less economically – developed countries (LEDCs).

Students will also need to understand the factors that are likely to affect the popularity and appeal of destinations, both now and in the future: 1)economic 2)environmental 3)socio-cultural 4)political

Objectives Candidates should be able to understand the principles of successful destination management including: 1)maximizing the retention of visitor spending at the location 2)investing tourism income in public and social projects for local communities

3) widening access to facilities and assets 4) staff training and development 5) training and employment of local people in tourism related activities 6) tourism education

Candidates should also understand how destination management can minimise tourism’s negative impacts through: 1)planning 2)using the principles of sustainable development
