SusChem Brokerage Event 14 September 2011 Project idea SUSCHEM BROKERAGE EVENT 2012 PROJECT IDEA (BRIEF SUMMARY) Bio-derived materials will be used to produce white precursor fibre of suitable quality for conversion to carbon fibre by the use of low energy processes such as microwave. This will offer a lower cost route to carbon fibre production with minimal environmental impact whilst maintaining product quality. PROJECT OBJECTIVES  1 Develop and produce new precursor “white” fibres from sustainable sources  2 Develop and evaluate new energy-efficient processes for the oxidation, carbonisation and graphitisation of the fibres to produce high quality carbon fibre suitable for industrial use  3. Produce and characterise industrially relevant thermoset and thermoplastic prepregs and fibre preforms  4. Produce and evaluate moulded composite panels PROJECT IMPACT  1 The development of new processes for fibre production from sustainable resources using less energy than current processes  2 Establishment of a platform technology providing methodologies to produce fibres and to process them into composite materials which meet the requirements of industry
