The name Harvard comes from the college’s first benefactor, the young minister John Harvard of Charlestown. Upon his death in 1638, he left his library and half his estate to the institution established in 1636 by vote of the Great and General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony Naming

History Harvard was founded in 1636, the College trained many Puritan ministers. The takeover of Harvard by the Unitarians in 1805 resulted in the secularization of the American college. Charles W. Eliot, president 1869-1909, eliminated the favored position of Christianity from the curriculum while opening it to student self direction.

History During the twentieth century, Harvard's international reputation grew as a burgeoning endowment and prominent professors expanded the university's scope Explosive growth in the student population continued with the addition of new graduate schools and the expansion of the undergraduate program.

Organization Harvard University is made up of 11 principal academic units – ten faculties and the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study. The ten faculties oversee schools and divisions that offer courses and award academic degrees.

Campus Harvard's 210-acre (85 ha) main campus is centered on Harvard Yard in Cambridge. Sophomore, junior, and senior undergraduates live in twelve residential Houses.

Campus The Harvard Business School and many of the university's athletics facilities, including Harvard Stadium, are located on a 359-acre (145 ha) campus opposite the Cambridge campus in Allston.

Campus The Harvard Medical School, Harvard School of Dental Medicine, and the Harvard School of Public Health are located on a 22 acre (8.9 ha) campus in the Longwood Medical and Academic Area.

Student Life : the house system The River House (9) is located in the southern part of Harvard yard, between the Park and the Charles river and include: Adams House Dunster House Eliot House Kirkland House Leverett House Lowell House Mather House Quincy House Winthrop House

Student Life : the house system Quad House(3) located half a mile from Harvard Park and hosted jointly with the College of Radcliffe since then, they have combined their residential system with Harvard in 1977: Cabot House Currier House Pforzheimer House

Student Life : the house system The thirteenth house, bearing the name of Dudley House is uninhabited, but performs administrative and social functions, for example, for meetings, and to stay some graduate students. It is named in honor of Thomas Dudley, who signed the Charter of Harvard University, as Governor of the Massachusetts Bay colony.

Museums and libraries At Harvard 80 individual libraries, which are 15 million volumes. The three most popular library for bachelors is Cabot Science Library, Lamont Library and Widener Library. Also at Harvard has several museums: The Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts, Harvard Art Museums, Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology, Semitic Museum.

Some other facts There are 2,110 professors, lecturers, and instructors serve, with 6,715 undergraduate and 12,424 graduate students. Harvard Undergraduate Television (HUTV) is the Harvard College student-run Internet television network. In my opinion, Harvard is the most prestigious university. It has many interesting training programs. All my life I have dreamed about getting into Harvard and I`ll always aspire to my dream.
