23. What are some durable surfaces?

24. TRAVEL & CAMP ON DURABLE SURFACES When Traveling: Stay on established trails Don’t shortcut switchbacks Hike in single file Stay in the middle of the Trail Snow

25. TRAVEL & CAMP ON DURABLE SURFACES Stay in the middle of watery or rutted trails to lessen erosion When crossing snow patches, follow the trail as much as possible Avoid fragile areas when saturated by heavy rain or snowmelt

TRAVEL & CAMP ON DURABLE SURFACES Trail Etiquette: Yield the right away to uphill hikers – step of the trial and avoid stepping onto plants Yield the right away to horses, llamas or other pack animals - MOST OF ALL follow the instructions of the rider (usually going to the downhill side of the trail).

27. TRAVEL & CAMP ON DURABLE SURFACES Trailless Areas: Strongly discouraged in frontcountry settings Stay on established trails & concentrate activities in these areas for group activities.

28. TRAVEL & CAMP ON DURABLE SURFACES Camping: Make reservations if necessary Stick to established campsites large enough for the group If none are available, erect tents over footprints on a slightly raised areas that have good drainage Look for unsafe trees - widow makers

29. CAMP & TRAVEL ON DURABLE SURFACES Camping: Protect riparian areas, camp 200 feet from lakes and streams Good campsite are found not made Keep campsites small – focus on areas where vegetation is absent Disperse to prevent campsite social trails Avoid places where impacts are beginning

31. DISPOSE OF WASTE PROPERLY Pack It In & Pack It Out! Inspect campsites for trash, and leftover or spilled food and pack it out. Deposit solid human waste in catholes, off the trail, dig a hole 6 – 8 inches deep & 200 feet from water – cover & disguise Urinate on durable surfaces or on the trail Pack out toilet paper & hygiene products

32. DISPOSE OF WASTE PROPERLY Pack It In & Pack It Out! Wash yourself & dishes 200 feet from water sources – use small amounts of biodegradable soap Dishwater containing food or food particulates should strained and packed out Broadcast strained brackish water

34. Preserve The Past: Observe, but don’t touch, cultural or historic structures and artifacts Leave rocks, plants and other natural objects as you find them Avoid introducing or transporting non-native species Don’t build structures, furniture or dig trenches

36. Campfires can cause lasting impacts Use lightweight stoves for cooking Fires are permitted in established fire rings or mounded fires Burn all wood and coals to ash Put out campfires completely When cold, scatter ashes
