3 History -Abraham was chosen by God to be the father of the “chosen people” about 4,000 years ago. -Abraham’s descendents were enslaved in Egypt -Moses led them out of enslavement to the promised land (This was called the Exodus.) -Moses received 10 commandments directly from God *Judaism is the FIRST MAJOR monotheistic religion

4 Belief God is called Yaweh. *10 Commandments* 1.Only one God 2.Do not worship fake idols 3.Do not use God’s name in vain 4.Keep the Sabbath day holy 5.Honor mom and dad 6.Do not kill 7.Do not commit adultery (be faithful to spouse) 8.Do not steal 9.Do not lie or make false accusations 10.Do not covet/envy Jewish people believe in an afterlife (heaven)

5 Sacred Writings Torah: -Jewish Laws -written in Hebrew -written on scrolls Talmud: an interpretation of the Torah Ten Commandments: Laws that were given to Moses

6 Spiritual Places Capital city: Jerusalem Temple/synagogue/shul: - Place of study, worship, community or gathering - Where Jews attend Sabbath services Rabbi teaches the lessons of the Torah Cantor leads the chants/prayers

7 Practices/Traditions Observe the Sabbath (Usually from the sundown on Friday until sundown on Saturday) 3 branches of Judaism : 1.Orthodox 2.Reform 3.Conservative Kosher laws: dietary restrictions followed by Jews. Foods are prepared a certain way or come from certain animals. Bar Mitzvah / Bat Mitzvah: Ceremony marking passage into adulthood

8 Holidays: Yom Kippur- Day of Atonement Rosh Hashanah- Jewish New Year Hanukkah- Festival of light celebrating a victory in ancient Israel Passover- celebrates the Exodus -meal is called Seder
