Infectious Disease vs. Communicable Disease (key terms in bold) Infectious Disease: both communicable disease and disease caused by organisms that are not communicable – Ex: Malaria is caused by an person, but usually transmitted by a mosquito and not person to person. However, still considered communicable Communicable Disease: disease with the ability to be transferred from person to person or from animals to human by a variety of routes: air, water, contaminated articles, insects and animal bites

Infectious Disease Burden Robert Koch: discovered bacterium that causes TB 1980s: HIV/AIDS epidemic in the U.S. – Why is TB a problem for individuals with HIV/AIDS? Which country/continent has the most cases of HIV/AIDS currently? Which country has the second most cases? What is going on in these countries that might increase HIV/AIDS spread?

What public health tools are available to fight disease? Key words are in bold Quarantine – When should we quarantine an individual? Immunizations (faulty link of MMR vaccine to autism) – What is passive immunity? – What is the difference between inactivated (dead) and live vaccines (attenuated live)? – Do immunizations only protect the individuals that receive them? What is herd immunity?

What public health tools are available to fight disease? Screening and Case Finding – What is case finding? Treatment – What is epidemiological treatment? Efforts to maximize effectiveness of treatments and prevent resistance – Directly observer therapy (DOT) for TB? – MRSA? – Ring vaccination?

How can public health eliminate specific communicable diseases? HIV/AIDS – How is it transmitted (page 107)? – How is it prevented? What are possible interventions? – What options are available for testing? – What options are available for treatment?

Next Week-Unit 7 Chapter 8 Environmental Health and Safety The scope of environmental diseases and injuries are very complex. In Unit 7 the scope of the environment will include the unaltered “natural” environment, the altered environment and the built environment and how each of these effect health and safety of the individual and communities.
