2 Where? Arizona-Nevada Border 30 miles southeast of Las Vegas, Nevada

3 How? The Colorado River had to be moved and flow through tunnels. Workers built a 660 foot base for the dam. Using ropes to hold them, workers smoothed the sides of the canyon walls. The concrete was poured in square blocks.

4 Fun Fact The construction workers used water pipes to cools the concrete blocks faster. If the water pipes were not used, the dam would not be finished today.

5 Fun Fact The dam created Lake Mead.

6 Fun Fact On July 2, 1983, Lake Mead’s water level rose so high that it spilled over the dam.

7 Fun Fact The Hoover Dam has stood for 60 years.
