Monique.petitdidier@cetp.ipsl.fr Casablanca Septembre 2005 1 Earth Science Applications Monique Petitdidier (IPSL) Coordinator Earth Science in the Grid project, EGEE EGEE is funded by the European Union under contract IST-2003-508833 Monique.petitdidier@cetp.ipsl.fr

Monique.petitdidier@cetp.ipsl.fr Casablanca Septembre 2005 2 APPLICATIONS ported on EGEE Earth Observation by Satellite Hydrology Solid Earth Physics Climate Geosciences Chemistry of the Mars Upper Atmosphere Meteorology

Monique.petitdidier@cetp.ipsl.fr Casablanca Septembre 2005 3 September 2005: SITES: 130, >15000 CPUS 31 countries, 10 out of Europe with 18 sites Site distribution for HEP, 30-50 sites for Earth Science

Monique.petitdidier@cetp.ipsl.fr Casablanca Septembre 2005 4 EARTH OBSERVATION BY SATELLITE [1] Typical satellite case: large number of files 7 years of Ozone from GOME/ERS2 experiment CHALLENGE PRODUCTION: Complex Algorithms VALIDATION: For a given day find 10 profiles among 26000.

Monique.petitdidier@cetp.ipsl.fr Casablanca Septembre 2005 5 ESA(IT) – KNMI(NL) Processing of raw GOME data to ozone profiles. 2 alternative algorithms ~28000 profiles/day IPSL(FR) Validate some of the GOME ozone profiles (~10 6 /y) Coincident in space and time with Ground-Based measurements Visualization & Analyze EGEE environment Level 2 (example of 1 day total O 3 ) Level 1 Raw satellite data from the GOME instrument (~75 GB - ~5000 orbits/y) The EGEE Ozone processing and validation test-case Additional GRID demonstration: GOMOS, OMI, Meris, …

Monique.petitdidier@cetp.ipsl.fr Casablanca Septembre 2005 6 SEISMOLOGY[1] Fast Determination of mechanisms of important earthquakes (IPGP: E. Clévédé, G. Patau) Challenge Provide results 24h -48h after its occurrence Application to run on alert  Collect data of 30 seismic stations from GEOSCOPE worldwide network  Select stations and data  Definition of a spatial 3D grid +time  Run for example 50-100jobs Peru earthquake, 23/6/2001, Mw=8.3 Data used: 15 Geoscope Stations 5 Seisms already ported: Peru, Guadeloupe, Indonesia (Dec.), Japon, Indonesia (Feb.)

Monique.petitdidier@cetp.ipsl.fr Casablanca Septembre 2005 7 SEISMOLOGY [2] Indonesian EQ 25 March 2005 Thanks to the grid, the best of the 30,000 solutions could be found within 30 hours after the earthquake took place. This best solution was later confirmed by comparing it with results from other analysis methods. Many CPUs (>100) from time to time without reservation

Monique.petitdidier@cetp.ipsl.fr Casablanca Septembre 2005 8 HYDROLOGY [1] Flood Prediction: Experimental data and Models. L. Hluchy, Viet Tran, M. Ciglan …. (II-SAS, Bratislava Slovaquie) CHALLENGE Complex application: Assimilation of data in models and cascade of simulations Data sources Hydrological simulation Hydraulic simulation Portal Meteorological simulation Cascade of simulations

Monique.petitdidier@cetp.ipsl.fr Casablanca Septembre 2005 9 Korba coastal aquifer Tunisia Cape Bon Peninsula 70km south-east of Tunis 45 km Management of water resources in Mediterranean area (SWIMED) G. Lecca (CRS4 Italy), P. Renard (Unine, CH), J. Kerrou (INAT, Tunisia), R. Ababou (IMFT, Fr)

Monique.petitdidier@cetp.ipsl.fr Casablanca Septembre 2005 10 Groundwater modeling Aim: estimate sustainable extraction scheme - improve management CODESA-3D: Density- dependent 3D coupled groundwater flow and transport simulations Data requirement Geology Topography Meteorology Water extraction by the farmer Aquifer properties Soil maps Land use One simulated map of water levels

Monique.petitdidier@cetp.ipsl.fr Casablanca Septembre 2005 11 Opportunities and challenges with respect to Grid technology Solving the Monte Carlo problem in a reasonable amount of time: producing results Enhancing the data sharing between the field geologists, modelers, and water managers Allowing the water managers in Tunisia to investigate the potential impacts of management decision through a remote use of the grid : web interface - EUMED Map of average salinity in the aquifer calculated by Monte Carlo simulations with a stochastic pumping rate model coupled with finite element simulations

Monique.petitdidier@cetp.ipsl.fr Casablanca Septembre 2005 12 GEOSCIENCES Generic seismic platform software, based on Geocluster commercial software developed by CGG Includes 400 geophysical modules, implemented on EGEE Used by both academics and private companies. Free of charge for Academics, with charge for R&D

Monique.petitdidier@cetp.ipsl.fr Casablanca Septembre 2005 13 EARTH SCIENCE ORGANISATION  Coordination Earth Science: Monique Petitdidier (IPSL)  14 Research Laboratoiries and Institutes; One organisation: ESA, 3 Private companies, CGG, DutchSpace et Iguassu Software Systems  Bulgaria, France, Italy, Germany, Greece, The Netherlands, Russia, Slovakia, Switzerland, Tchequie  Around 40 persons registered in the VOs Welcome to new partners

Monique.petitdidier@cetp.ipsl.fr Casablanca Septembre 2005 14 CONCLUSION Access of a lot more computer resources than the ones brought A large variety of applications ported on EGEE ; that incites new users Earth Observation: unique case of validation of the whole dataset (time and space) and several algorithms Seismology and Hydrology: possibility to fulfill in real or quasi real time the Civil Sector requests. Seismology: example of application on alert Geocluster: initiative R&D de la Compagnie Générale de Géophysique Interactive Collaboration of the teams around a project Economy of person-power and resources Good opportunity for North South collaboration New vision of the scientist role Grid Pushes frontiers of scientific discovery by exploiting advanced computational methods.
