that having a job is an important way to help us ensure we have money now and in the future that our job choice may be influenced by money Today we will learn…

What do you know about the world of work? Look at the statements are they true or false? There are lots of different jobs we could do We might need special skills and qualifications to do a job When we work we get paid The money we earn is called a salary Some jobs are paid by the hour or the day You can compare jobs by looking at how much they pay per year Working pays a lot of money An annual salary is how much you get paid per month Everyone has to work You get paid for the time spent travelling to and from work Everyone gets paid the same for doing the same job The more experienced you are the more money you might earn

Why do we work? Imagine a world where nobody worked… What would life be like? Where would our money come from? Would this be a nice world to live in? In groups discuss the advantages and disadvantages of working – make a list of your ideas.

Working… Advantages Allows us to earn money to live Enables us to contribute to society Gives us something purposeful to do Makes us feel valued Puts us into contact with other people Allows us to develop new skills and knowledge Allows us to do new things and go to new places Allows us to use the skills and knowledge we already have Allows us to do things we like to do

Disadvantages Less time to do what we want to do Uses up our energy Have to get up and go out each working day No flexibility to do things when we want Extra responsibility Might have to learn new skills or knowledge Might have to do something we don’t want to Have to work with others Have to do what you are told to do

What’s that job Look at the job card you’ve been given and think about what the job involves. Then write: a description of what you would have to do if you had that job the skills and qualifications you think you would need to do that job how much it pays Share your ideas with the rest of the class

What do you need to know about a job? Things to think about: How much it pays? How many hours will I have to work – per day, per week? What skills and qualifications will I need? Where it is located – will I have to move? How long will it take me to travel to work each day? Will I be able to develop my skills and earn more over time? How much holiday will I get? Will I need specialist clothes or equipment to do the job?

In the future… “When I grow up I want to be ….” Write down why you want this job, what skills, knowledge and qualifications you will need to do it and what you think you might earn.
