DRAWING & PAINTING TECHNIQUES & STYLES

CROSS HATCHING Common with pen artists Show value with lines Quantity, thickness and spacing of the lines will affect the brightness of the overall image, and emphasize forms creating the illusion of volume. Use of fine parallel lines drawn closely together, to create the illusion of shade or texture in a drawing.

Contour Lines Give shape and volume to your drawing w/ simple lines Great way to begin planning Essentially an outline Relies more on sensation than perception

CROSS CONTOUR Drawn across the form. May be horizontal or vertical, or both. Often, in more complex forms, cross-contours will be drawn at varying angles.

Smooth Shading Apply continuous tone, varying your pressure gradually to create smooth shading. smoothly-changing colors across the surface Hard and Soft pencils

Gesture Drawing Quick Relaxed Defined by rapid execution Drawing which attempts to capture action or movement. Takes as little as 30 seconds to 2 minutes

Abstract Non-representational Expression of though, feeling, or emotion without a realistic image Departure from reality in Abstract art, nonfigurative art, nonobjective art, and nonrepresentational art are loosely related terms

TECHNICAL DRAWING DRAFTING The method of creating exact representations of objects for architecture and engineering Plans Shows how something works

REALISM Shows things exactly as they appear in life Depicts subjects without embellishment or interpretation.

EXPRESSIONISM Express meaning or emotional experience Most commonly seen in painting and poetry More abstract Evokes moods or ideas

POINTILLISM Small dots or strokes to make up the picture Dots blend to create “color mixing” which uses dots of different colors to simulate blended colors

POP ART “Popular” Art Every day item drawn in brash and colorful way Inspired by comic strips, advertising, and popular entertainment (mass culture) Removed from its known context Emphasizes common ideas with use of irony

Primitivism Looks like it is done by a child Very simple Flat Related to naïve and folk art

SURREALISM Based on dreams Familiar objects that looked strange or mysterious Element of surprise: unexpected juxtapositions Tap the subconscious mind

IMPRESSIONISTIC Emphasis on accurate depiction of light in its changing qualities Common, ordinary subject matter (often outdoor) Inclusion of movement as a crucial element of human perception and experience Unusual visual angles Freely brushed colors Realistic scenes Not blended smoothly

FAUVISM "wild beasts" Strong color of realism

ISOMETRIC 3D drawings They show three sides Dimensional proportion

ILLUSTRATION Video games, graphic novels, comics, film, poster art For use in publication

POSITIVE/NEGATIVE The negative space is defined by the edges of the positive space and the frame or border. Negative space defines the subject

STIPPLE Simulation of shading by using small dots Single color/pigment is used Dense dots = darker shade
