Behavior Therapies Emphasis is on changing learned behaviors rather than understanding feelings... Doubt the healing power of self-awareness of the insight therapies Classical Conditioning-> -> Try Counterconditioning: Types of Counterconditioning: a. Exposure Therapy- Expose people to the things they fear or avoid - Systematic desensitization : -Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy (progressively exposes people to electronic simulations to their fears) b. Behavior Therapies Try Operant Conditioning-> Behavior Modification- reinforce desired behaviors, withhold for undesired behaviors Token Economies- Argument- are they too dependent on extrinsic rewards for it to really work? Is this really ethical to control behavior of another?

Cognitive Therapy What do they do? Help people change the way they think about their problem, stop the ruminating on the negative thoughts a. REBT- Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy- developed by Albert Ellis. Change peoples thinking by revealing the “absurdity” of their self-defeating ideas. Challenges illogical thinking. *** b. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy- -Useful in treating anxiety, mood disorders, OCD->

Group & Family Therapy Group Therapy –Therapy conducted in groups. Does not provide the same degree of therapist involvement, but does save time and money. –Offers: Family Therapy –Therapy that treats the family as a system. Views ones unwanted behaviors as influenced by, or directed at family members. –
