3 Healthcare Science – Apprenticeship Structure The Healthcare Science Apprenticeship structure has four levels for recognition of staff, with clear progression routes within and beyond Career Framework 1-4 Apprenticeship at CF2 – Assistants Advanced Apprenticeship at CF3 – Assistants Higher Apprenticeship 4 at CF4 – Associates Higher Apprenticeship 5/FD - Associates The above are generic titles, indicating level, the actual titles may vary across the four administrations.

4 Apprenticeships contain two types of qualification: 1.A technical qualification – knowledge and academic learning 2.A vocational qualification – competence based for application and assessment in workplace Both elements may be combined in a single qualification, such as a work based- foundation degree at level 5. The Healthcare Science Apprenticeship structure will contain Healthcare Science qualifications that ensure focus on development, achievement and quality of the clinical, scientific and support services needed in future roles. 5 Healthcare Science – Apprenticeship Structure The new Apprenticeship structure ensures consistency and flexibility through a modular approach structured in four components. These four components form the basis of each level of development, achievement and progression and incorporate all requirements of Apprenticeship regulations. 6 Healthcare Science – Apprenticeship Structure CORE MODULES - Mandatory For assistants – Intermediate Apprenticeship and Advanced Apprenticeship Introduction to Healthcare Science Role responsibilities within Healthcare Science Working in partnership in Healthcare Science Introduction to investigation of human disease and disorders Supporting health, safety and security in the healthcare science environment For associates – Higher Apprenticeship 4 The use of scientific method in Healthcare Science The legal, ethical and regulatory context of Healthcare Science Partnership working with patients, colleagues and other professionals Methods of investigation, treatment and management of human disease and disorders Ensuring safety, security and well-being in the Healthcare science environment For associates – Higher Apprenticeship 5/FD Higher education and the work environment study skills Valuing people and fostering dignity and respect Research and critical thinking Leadership practice

7 Healthcare Science – Apprenticeship Structure THEMED MODULES - Optional There are four themes in the structure, each containing modules for selection. Selections can be made across themes to meet the needs of the service, roles and credit requirements of the organisation. Pathology investigations of disease and disorders Clinical investigation of human functions and systems Investigating with imaging techniques Physics and engineering in healthcare science

8 Healthcare Science – Apprenticeship Structure FUNCTIONAL CATEGORY MODULES - Optional There are 13 functional categories – modules are selected across categories to meet the needs of the service, roles and credit requirements of the relevant qualification. FC1 Administration, records and data FC2 Preparing the healthcare science environment FC3 Supporting The Safe Working Environment FC4 Recording and reporting clinical data FC5 Patient contact, support and engagement FC6 Assessing Patient Status FC7 Obtaining samples, specimens and tissues FC8 Investigating samples and specimens FC9 Patient investigations in healthcare science FC10 Imaging investigations and diagnostics inc radiation FC11 Maintaining and preparing equipment for clinical use FC12 Quality control in healthcare science FC13 Personal management and development

9 Healthcare Science – Apprenticeship Structure Personal, Cognitive and Professional Framework The Personal, Cognitive & Professional Framework provides underpinning core skills relating to health care science. Descriptors grouped in eight domains, ensure compliance with the relevant level of award/qualification mapped to Good Scientific Practice and its use within PTP mapped to Core/Key skills descriptors used within relevant national qualification frameworks. 1Independent enquiry 2Problem solving - using practical and investigative techniques 3Creative thinking and innovation – The application of scientific ideas, theories and models and challenging accepted ideas 4Working with others - Collaborating with colleagues and other professionals to improve personal performance and service delivery 5Mathematical and statistical analysis – application in healthcare science 6Communicating with colleagues, service users and other professionals 7Using information and communication technology (ICT) 8Self-Management (including Reflective learning)

10 Healthcare Science – Apprenticeship Structure Using the agreed modular structure, new “ apprenticeship compliant” Healthcare Science qualifications will be developed that offer the outlined modular flexibility. Mapping of existing qualifications to the framework will be confirmed with guidance on APL equivalence. The Healthcare Science Apprenticeship Frameworks for England will be available next year. The Apprenticeship framework may need slight adaptation to reflect the different regulatory requirements in England, Wales and Scotland.

11 Healthcare Science – Higher Apprenticeship Level 5 Higher Apprenticeship level 5 supports progression from Apprenticeships at CF 2-4 to PTP at CF5. The Higher Apprenticeship at level 5 will follow the same structure as lower level frameworks offering consistency and flexibility to ensure focus on development, achievement and quality of clinical, scientific and support services needed in future roles. Higher Apprenticeship Level 5 will offer a foundation degree that will be equivalent to the first two years of PTP.

12 Higher Apprenticeship Level 5 Healthcare Science pathway & UWE Foundation Degree Development of the Healthcare Science Higher Apprenticeship that will be offered nationally is not yet complete. There is a Healthcare Science Higher Apprenticeship pathway available now. The Higher Apprenticeship for Life Science & Chemical Science Professionals uses the UWE foundation degree in healthcare science. Developed to be consistent with the requirements of MSC CF 2-4, it offers service providers the opportunity to start using this programme now and subsequently migrate to the Healthcare Science Higher Apprenticeship once it is issued. UWE foundation degree will be used as the basis for developing other apprenticeship compliant foundation degrees so that the Higher Apprenticeship level 5 can be offered nationally.

13 Healthcare Science – Higher Apprenticeship Level 5 Supporting the delivery of Higher Apprenticeships As part of the Higher Apprenticeship for Life Science & Chemical Science Professionals, Cogent has worked with a number of universities to develop foundation degrees for other occupational areas that are compliant with Apprenticeship regulations.
